What if You Gave an Inauguration & Nobody Came?

Hoo boy! We are right here, at Apocalypse Inauguration Eve, and I gotta tell you, my tummy is doing flip flops. I don’t even know if I can get all these cuppycakes down that I have lined up on the counter in front of me. Despite a certain party’s claims to the contrary, you can find a ball gown in DC, and apparently hotel rooms are available too. On the one hand, you hate to rile up a person with so thin a skin and such a penchant for vindictiveness.

On the other hand, there is this:

Hey, save some cuppycakes for me!

Panda On, and let’s be safe out there!

And did anyone get my nod to the old Bob and Ray “Wally Ballou” routines, where they joined the roving reporter midway through his introduction? We need anything we can find to cheer ourselves up! Enjoy!

Join the Panda March this Saturday!

If you want to be where the action is the day after THE DAY AFTER, be sure to join one of the Women’s Marches that will taking place around the country. And yes, I put the phrase The Day After in scary SHOUTYCAPS/ all bold typing in reference to one of those post apocalyptic movies about the end of the world. The pandas are planning to march and I hope you will too. We are having a local march in Langley and I plan to attend. Maybe we’ll all go out for coffee and cuppycakes after. It’s shaping up to be that kind of week.

Join the #WePreferPinky Movement today!

I’d like to thank writer Deborah Underwood for coming up with the term “SHOUTYCAPS” to describe the feeling you get when someone writes in all capital letters. That’s why they pay her the big bucks. (Actually, hardly any writers for children make big bucks, so if you are looking for some really fun books for kids in your life, do check out her books at your local bookstore or on her website! She and her cat will thank you!)

The Little Gift That Keeps on Giving

Oh me, oh my! What trouble has Pinky caused now? I think I hear the phone lines sizzling even now, as Lun Lun discovers just what Pinky’s little gift to the twins actually was! But look how nicely she is playing Go Fish with her little brother. She is even…um…well, not exactly letting him win so much, as by not cheating so effectively that he doesn’t lose by much. Pinky is a font of generosity today!

Let’s see what is happening down in PandAlanta!

Resolution Day

You say you want a resolution, well, you know, you can never change the bear… Oh! Hello everyone. Welcome to 2017. We hope that 2017 turns out a lot better than 2016, but we really won’t know until we get there, right? One thing you can be sure of, as long as I can hold a pencil and pen, and my quart of india ink (extra black!) doesn’t run out, I will be bringing you new panda ‘toons twice a week, on Sundays and Wednesdays, and on Fridays, there will be a small collection of some of my favorite ‘toons of the past eight years! Yes, it has been that long!

You’d think I would be famous by now.

And while Bubba is growing up, some bears never change.

Once again proving the intransigence of Pinky, and the omnipotence of Mommy Mei

Day 30: 31 Days of Pandas

Holy Moly! It’s day 30 of 31 Days of Pandas! We are almost at the end as the ball in Times Square makes its descent into the unknown. We have lost so many treasured, talented individuals this year, and now we have to add yet another to the list (as if Gene Wilder, Carrie Fisher, and Alan Rickman weren’t loss enough!) Yes, the father and grandfather of so many pandas, particularly the US pandas, Pan Pan passed away yesterday at the age of 31. He was quite a bear with the ladies and fathered 30 cubs and has over 130 descendants. He was really da bear! Farewell, Pan Pan. You will shine brightly in panda heaven.

But now, the conclusion of the Twelve Days of CrispMoss! Are you ready to sing?

HOW many more days are there?

Day 25: 31 Days of Pandas

Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas! And Happy Hanukkah! And Festivus! don’t forget Festivus! 31 Days of Pandas does NOT take a day off! no, no no! Ho ho ho! Well, that’s life in the fast lane, right? I’m sure someone will throw me a crust of pumpkin pie or something. There was something on my windshield the other day….it might have been stuffing. I don’t know. Whatever.

But enough whining around the Hanukkah bush because there is not a BMW in the driveway with a bow on it! let’s have a ‘toon!

31 days

Who didn’t have a sibling like Pinky?

And in the interests of cross cultural representation….

Today, you are a bear.

…if I were a panda, yadda dah dah da- da- da- AAARGH! I can’t stop!!!!!

Have a happy day, no matter what, if any, holiday you celebrate…and pass some pie this way, and maybe some of those little frosted cookies…

Panda On,

Day 18: 31 Days of Pandas

Mini Bob is kind of a culturally inclined bear, and so he never visits London without taking in a concert or two. Today’s photographic offering finds Mini Bob in the moments before a Vivaldi concert starts, at the world renowned St. Martin in the Fields. (as opposed to St. Martian in the Fields, more commonly referred to as War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells.) 31 Days of Pandas knows what is what!

And Mini Bob knows what is what; what, what?

The Hills are alive with the sound of Pandas….

And now, we return to the Story of Bubba, a small bear and his tummy…

Pinky does love her little brother! Or…maybe is she trying to pull a fast one on Santa?

You better watch out! You better not eat all the cuppycakes.
Pandy Claws is coming to town.

That’s right!

Day 14: 31 Days of Pandas

Here we are, almost halfway through 31 Days of Pandas! I have been saving this picture for a while, because I wanted to share it on a day when we all need a little lift, and I think the time is now.

One of the most favorite things about my recent trip to London, maybe destined to be my favorite experience in my entire life, was getting to see original sketches, up close and personal in the Victoria and Albert Museum study room. I first found out that a person could actually call up the museum and make an appointment, and tell them, “I would like to see this…” and they would say yes, and then you would do it –  from reading this blog post.

Since I have loved Winnie the Pooh from the time we first met, and that the original drawings by Earnest H. Shepard made me want to be an artist, the idea that I could hold one of his drawings in my hands was something I never thought was possible.

Of course, Mini Bob went along on my visit to the study room, and wanted his picture taken.

Mini Bob, hanging out with Pooh Bear and thinking about a snack

Can you believe they let Mini Bob get this close to an original pencil sketch?

But now, without further folderol, here is today’s ‘toon, where we see the aftermath of Bubba’s overindulgence in cuppycakes, not to mention what a good mom Mei Xiang is….

31 days

Oh come on…hasn’t that ever happened to you? One minute there are two dozen cuppycakes just sitting there, and the next minute they’re gone?

By the way, several people were asking for a poster of Yoga for Pandas. I designed one, but when I went to Cafe Press, where I sell products with my pandas on them, I found that they did not have a good size of posters. But having designed the graphic, I though I would put it on a few other items, while I search around for another way to make posters available. Here’s one of them, and you can see the others here. I’m still working on some Bubba things. sorry not to have them in time for Christmas, but there you have it.

Day 7: 31 Days of Pandas

And now, 31 Days of Pandas returns to our story which was interrupted by our…um…rant about whether we were allowed to have an opinion or not. Word to the wise, do not make a panda mad! Anyway, we left our story with Pinky at home, hiding under the covers as she tried to come to grips with the fact that she lost the election, and not only that, that the forces of evil and self interest had won by possibly sly and devious means. At the very least, the “winning” ticket has an interesting relationship with the truth, by which we mean that they lie like a rug.

But while the possibility that democracy would come screeching to a halt, lying twisted and smashed as if it were a speeding car that had hit a bridge abutment after skidding on a banana peel, a bigger catastrophe was taking place, just down the road at the National Zoo, and it had nothing to do with the 39,465,975 gallons of pink paint that Pinky had stored at the elephant house.

Bubba had a medical crisis!

Yes! the real life Bubba, aka Bei Bei, our junior panda in the seat of power, was not feeling well, from what turned out to be a lemon size wad of un-digested bamboo that was stuck in his intestine. He was hauled off to the hospital, where kind and dedicated, not to mention skilled veterinary surgeons removed the obstruction, sewed him back up, and sent him home to mom, who gave strict instructions to rest, play quietly inside, and for crying out loud, chew before you swallow! Dinner time is not a race! At least I think it was Bubba’s mom who said  this. I might be remembering someone else.

But first, this happened:

Meihems to the rescue

And for today’s #TravelsofMiniBob offering, we bring you Mini Bob posing with a portrait of someone who is a shining beacon for all who toil in the gardens of children’s literature. Of course I am referring to that pioneering writer and artist, Beatrix Potter. Her portrait resides at The National Portrait Gallery in London, which is one of my favorite museums, especially when you skip the floor with all the dour looking folks in black coats and big ruffly collars, and head straight to the 19th century.

Beatrix Potter

Look how excited Mini Bob is to pose with one of his heroes!

Until I saw the movie Miss Potter, I did not know that Beatrix Potter was the mother of the Land Trust movement in England; she bought and donated over 3,000 acres of open farmland in the Lakes District in England, thus ensuring it’s preservation for all to enjoy. She also licensed the use of her images on pottery, stuffed animals, and whatnot, thus ensuring that she could buy all this land and save it for the likes of us. It’s no wonder she is a hero to Mini Bob!

Meihems to the Rescue

When you need pandas, you can’t do better than a little bit of Meihem to fix what needs fixing. Needless to say, Pinky is going to need some extra persuasive coaching to be convinced to come out from under the covers. But meanwhile, back at the zoo, there was some real life drama happening. Bubba’s real life counterpart, Bei Bei had to go in for emergency surgery, due to a “lemon size lump of bamboo” plugging up his guts. He is back home and resting quietly (I believe Pinky is reading him her rough draft of her autobiography, in order to lull him to sleep) and I’m sure I will have a ‘toon or two relating to the ordeal, but first, this!

When you need help, best call for MEIHEM!

Meihem

Care for a little Meihem?

And don’t forget to get ready for this years 31 Days of Pandas! We have a special treat, The Travels of Mini-Bob! Get ready to join Mini-Bob as he visits Merry Olde England, and some historic sights (and Pooh Bear!!!!!)
