and Now, Back to COOKIE BALANCING

I know you were all waiting for me to pontificate on all things cookie balancing, weren’t you? I thought you might have been! But what with one thing (Pinky and Bubba’s story) and another (my response to the slander from Foxxy News) well, my dissertation on cookie balancing just got pushed back again and again.

But now, with no further ado, The Panda Chronicles brings you…

The truth about the fascinating sport of cookie balancing! (Soon to be an Olympic event!)

Did I mention I broke the world record in cookie balancing?

The Truth About Pandas 3

I think this just about wraps it up! Next week we’ll get back to our previously interrupted story about Pinky, Bubba, and Ping. Just how DID Pinky get there so quickly?

In case you want to read the other two ‘toons on this subject, you can find them here:
The Truth About Pandas 1
The Truth About Pandas 2

And now, our most strenuous rebuttal of the idjits at Foxxy “News”!

When the truth is found…
to beeee lies….

Do not, I repeat DO NOT make pandas mad. Do I have to say it again?
Be sure to tune in on Sunday, when we return from this interruption of an interruption, to our previous story. Now what was that about????

Celebrating 10 years of Panda Satire

Today, we’re celebrating 10 years of panda satire! I didn’t actually start posting ‘toons online until 2009, but I started drawing panda satire in 2008 after seeing an article about the panda ranches written by James Fallows.

Let’s take a look at some of the early ‘toons, have a few cuppycakes, and celebrate 10 years of Being the Bear!

Ever wondered where all these pandas came from?

Is it that time already?

Can Mehitabel endure the tidal wave of pandas?

You can’t be too careful!

Ha ha! Here’s a toothbrush!

Don’t forget to tune in Sunday for the next installment of “The Toronto Farewell!”

Fabulous Furry Friday presents…

Don’t ask me how I know this:

One other piece of advice for those visiting the PanDiego Zoo (Home of the real Wu Self!) and that is this: Do NOT, under any circumstances, ride of the Skyfari cable cars when it’s raining. Even a seemingly innocent misty rain becomes a driving gale while you are suspended 60 feet above the ground, moving horizontally at a fairly spiffy pace, high above the zoo. Just sayin’.

I mean I would say so if I, or anyone I actually know, had direct experience of this phenomenon.

Meanwhile, on with today’s round up of ‘toons! And what better way to start than with Wu’s birthday ‘toon from last July!

In case you have forgotten than tRump has rescinded the ban on the import of dead elephant trophies…

inauguration

Mittens is STILL telling anyone who will listen that his inauguration had the highest attendance in the history of the universe. I don’t THINK so!

Huzzah and congratulations to all the students who observed the peaceful walkout to protest the failure of Congress to enact sensible gun regulations. Could they be failing to act because the NRA donates heavily to some members of Congress? Hmmm? You tell me. I look forward to attending a march on March 24th, to remind Congress that we ARE paying attention to what they do (and don’t do) and plan to vote accordingly.

Here’s a photo of my home town, little Langley, having a protest march on the day after tRump’s inauguration.

Day 23: 31 Days of Pandas

Wowee! We are already up to day 23 of 31 Days of Pandas!

It’s really tempting to want to focus on the ‘toons of last year so that we can keep the pain and horror of the events of the last 12 months alive, but somehow, I need some kinder and gentler pandas today.

Well, until Monday when the cubbies sing their straight from the hip version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentle Bears for you all.

I hope you enjoyed our encore production of It’s a Wunderful Life, starring the Wu Self and Bee, the bear, my favorite holiday classic! Tomorrow we return to 101 Bebe Panda-Nations for another episode!  Meanwhile, let’s spin the dial of the panda way-back machine and see what ‘toons pop up! Welcome to some new readers who found us by way of Twidder. We hope that they have a wonderful time rummaging through the archives and catching up with panda satire history!

Should Pandas pay their own way?

Wheel…of…PANDAS!!!!!

We should note that they really don’t let you do this anymore. I wonder why.

Inspired by my discovery of the San Diego Zoo website!

The Pinky Defense

Apologies for my absence from the pandasphere, but I have been updating my skills in the fine art realm! Yes, I’ve been taking another class in egg tempera, and while this has nothing to do with pandas, I am learning lots of fine arty stuff! Huzzah! For any of you out there who are also artists, you may know that the technique of egg tempera is an old one, and full of myths and mythology in its history and practice.

The class is taught by the extremely talented Koo Schadler, and if you’ve never heard of her, do take a look at her work; you’ll be glad you did. And not only is she a damn fine painter, she is a very generous human being, both with her knowledge (which is encyclopedic) and her personal warmth. If you are looking to expand your art skills in a supportive, information rich class, you can’t go wrong taking one of her classes.

But now! The Pinky Defense! I know you’ve been waiting!

It’s True! I Went to China

…and I didn’t even bring you a lousy tee shirt! For those of you who supported my Kickstarter project to travel to China, you have been following along with my real time posts from the road. But if you aren’t part of that faithful contingent, don’t despair! I’ll be transferring my trip journal to these very pages, adding photographs and sketches that I did on the road, AND sharing the artwork that will be forthcoming as soon as I can escape the jet lag nap monster that has hit me hard since my return.

The time difference between the west/lefty coast of the US and China is 15 hours, with a skip and a jump across the international date line thrown in for good measure. I’m only beginning to go through my photographs, to sort out the travel documentary photos from the eventual art photos. I’ll also be writing some ‘toons about my travels, including today’s offering!

Let’s see what Bob has brought back from China! Huzzah!

China

Well, it’s better than a tee shirt, right?

Ping Ping is a real panda that I met at the Gengda Panda base. He was the sweetest little panda, and according to his nanny, the most gentle panda. We had a heartfelt squeaking conversation, after which, I fed him carrots and panda bread. It was the best day ebber!

And don’t worry! I won’t forget about Bubba, Pinky, the Meihems, Six and Sebben, Wu, and the rest of the panda Chronicles gang! Stay tuned!

Some Pandas Leave – Some Pandas Return

It’s one of those things that most lovers of all things panda have a bit of a hard time with: We don’t own our pandas, we only rent them. America has not owned their resident pandas since the Nixon Pandas came to live here in 1972. And not only that, any panda cubs born here still belong to China and these pandas return to China any time after they are two years old. Well, return is not really correct, since they were born here, but that’s how it’s thought of in the panda procurement department.

As much as we’d like to keep all of our American born pandas, it’s just not gonna happen, so save your petition writing for your Congressperson.

A panda can dream though…

pandas return

But some pandas go both ways!

Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks as I share my adventures with real, actual pandas!

Is Our National Nightmare Over Yet?

I have…um…stepped away from the computer for a few weeks to have a confab with my panda cousins in China. (More about that later.) I’m pretty sure that it is safe to assume that there has been a  national nightmare or three in my absence.

Over the past 10 months I’ve done a lot of pondering, and one of the questions that I have been pondering is this: If the internet with such plentiful and easy access to information, had existed in the 1930’s would Hitler have come to power, so easily? I started asking myself that on November 9th, thinking that surely, with everything happening in full view, surely democracy could not be overturned so easily.

It appears I was wrong. Our national nightmare is in full tilt chaos, despite (or maybe because) so much unfiltered and unverified information  zipping around the airwaves.

I don’t know what to do, besides draw more pandas.

national nightmare

When, oh when, will this be over?

I’m really hoping that I’ll wake up soon.

Really
