Category Archives: Pandas in the time of COVID19

It’s Sunday Funday!

The Pandemic really isn’t over is it?

Yesterday one of my pandemic ‘toons popped up in someone’s time line, so I thought I would revisit the pandas experience of the Panda-demic.

It’s nothing that a little cocoa can’t fix!
You can’t get more socially distant than sending everyone to their room!
Is FEMA stealing marshymallows too?
Well, bless her heart!
Here comes Meihem!

There is always excitement in store when Six and Sebben show up. Mei must have been desperate to suggest this. I bet she won’t make that mistake again!

I just sent a check for $500 off to the Whatcom Humane Society, thanks to everyone who ordered a felty support kitty! There are still 6 more available, so check out the Felties Revisited page for information on ordering!

Till Tuesday (when I WILL have a new ‘toon)

You can’t have Zooms without Zoo!

Yes, we are all chomping at the bit to get back to real life with real people (or maybe not! Some of us have realized that not interacting in person is not all bad!) But why should people have all the Zooms? A Czech zoo decided to give it’s inhabitants a treat. And what penguin wouldn’t want to get a little culture?

I hope the penguins remembered to take all their fish with them!

Zoom you later!

Don’t You Want Somebody to Hug…

It’s been a long year, hasn’t it? Isolated in our pandemic quarantine quarters, zooming with friends or for work or for school. Only now, as vaccines are happening, are (some) people coming cautiously out of their dens…

Except of course for the morons who just can’t stay out of crowded bars and other places, and have been spreading viruses around like penny candy at a parade…

Meanwhile, some enterprising farms have a solution for that profound feeling of isolation we are all feeling…

Personally, I think the cows should get at least SOME of the money!

Okay…so I’m starting to get used to this new editing format, but I don’t like it yet.

The Day We’ve All Been Waiting For

The beginning of my Birthday Season!

Oh…um there is something else happening today, isn’t there? Just kidding. Yes, it is Election Day in the US, or you could more accurately say it is the end of the voting period, which for some states, started more than a month ago. So far, in the early voting, the rate of voting is significantly higher than even the total number of votes cast in the 2016 presidential election.

What does this mean?

Really, I have no idea.

I’ve pretty much said everything that can be said about You Know Who, so saying it one more time isn’t going to make a whole lot of difference. I am grateful for the voices of reason and hope, like Heather Cox Richardson, a historian who has been writing a daily newsletter about this election and the events surrounding it. I highly recommend reading her posts. I think they are probably collected in one place on her SubStack page, and you can book mark it and read it a few posts at a time if you need a little boost.

Just because voting ends today, the counting (and legal wrangling) could take much longer. Better to have some hopeful things to read instead of endless doom scrolling. (Okay, okay, I’m sure I’ll do some doom scrolling too)

I want to say a few things

First, thank you to all who have stuck with me through all this. An artists job is to make art about what touches us most deeply. Sometimes it is light, funny things; sometimes things get a little dark. I have learned to follow what my inner panda tells me to follow, to be true to what that inner panda is telling me is important. If you had to drop out for a while, I get it. Despite my wish to reread Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, there is no way in hell my nerves can take that right now. Same for 1984 or Animal Farm. Sorry, George.

I hope that after this is all over (and Joe Biden wins pleasepleasepleaseplease) that there is the will and power to get some important things done:

Voting is a right as well as an imperative. It should be easy to register and to vote for EVERYONE.
If the pandemic showed us anything, health care needs to be universal, affordable, and available for everyone, and not tied to employment.
While the Lincoln Project ads were devastating, clever, and brutal, everything they talked about are true things that tRUmp (and his minions) is doing. I know they won’t always be on our side. There needs to be room for conservatives, but not for them to lie or disadvantage voters who aren’t THEIR voters, as the current Republican Party has done. Promote what you believe are righteous policies and if they are what the majority of people want, well, then that is what will happen.
Gerrymandering needs to be put to rest. Voters should should choose their representatives. Representatives shouldn’t get to choose their voters. Corporate interests should not have the outsize influence that they have.

I swear there is a cartoon coming!

I sometimes wonder if maybe they way that I think is wrong. But I think the very fact that I can question my own beliefs, just might mean that I have an open mind. I see no such questioning from the people who support the terrible policies of Donald Trump. That elected officials can excuse and enable his terrible polices, tells me they are just as bad as he is. I hope they are voted out despite all the roadblocks they have thrown in front of their opposition.

If you haven’t voted already, I hope you have a plan to vote today.

And now, here is today’s ‘toon (warning, not particularly funny.)

Mittens Removal Day!

And for something funnier than I am today, check out Randy Rainbow’s latest video!

The Golden Age of Podcasts

I remember when podcasts weren’t really a thing. Then more and more people started doing them, and they were kind of funky and people did them from their kitchen, and you could hear the refrigerator cycle on, and maybe their cat would wander through and rub their tail across the microphone.

Then everyone started getting  more professional, getting sponsors so they could get better equipment, and maybe outfit or rent a studio to record in. They became much more sophisticated and they proliferated all over the place. Interviews with guests took place face to face.

Then the pandemic came, and suddenly people had to stay in their houses and apartments, to prevent getting or spreading the coronavirus. Then they were back in their kitchens and they were joined by late night news/comedy show hosts who were also broadcasting from their own kitchens or bedrooms or attics.

I have to say, I rather like these stripped down versions of these performances. There is a kind of unvarnished honesty in them. I’m sure Trevor Noah would prefer to be back in front of his live, studio audience. But really, I kind of like feeling like I have him to myself. It’s almost like talking one on one with a friend, without the complication of his other 568 best friends who are taking all his attention. I do think that maybe Jon Lovett is going feral, and I hope his relationship with Ronan Farrow survives, as he seems to be getting kind of feistier than normal in his isolation. No judgement Jon. It’s hard on all of us. Just, you know, maybe dial it back a little over dinner, okay?

For crying out loud! We need to Pod Save the Pandas!

Pod Save the Pandas! Collect the whole set!

Of course you can always find me at my kitchen table.

I Knew the Absence of You Know Who in the Tuesday ‘Toon was Too Good To Be True

I don’t know about you, but Tuesday’s absence of mentions about  You Know Who’s reign of terror was just what the doctor ordered. I mean…who would think anything could be worse than a global pandemic with over 112,000 Americans now dead?

Funny you should ask.

Pinky: but Mommee! I didn’t send people IN to da tiger’s cage!!!!

I really wish I had not read all those YA dystopian post apocalypse novels. really, I do. The storm troopers have arrived. I thought we all needed a little break, where the worst thing that happened was Pinky being rude to her departing guests! Break time is now over.

Wands up, everyone!

Buh buh buh buh BYEEEEEEEE!

How many of you remember the old SNL routine, with the flight attendants saying goodbye to the departing passengers?  As the people filed off the plane, the flight crew got ruder and ruder, and the “buh bye now!” got more sarcastic with each passenger. I think of this often, because an acquaintance of mine, who works in a local shop, and I have had an ongoing “buh bye” routine going for years.

We try to sneak up on each other so that each of us can be the first to say it. I’m afraid I’ll never top her “drive-by buh bye” that she delivered out her car window, as she saw me walking down the street. I hope that which ever one of us survives longer, at the memorial service for our departed friend, has the presence of mind to whisper “buh bye!” Who says people who live in small towns don’t know how to have fun?

It seems only natural that Pinky would deliver this line to the departing Cublanta twins!

Buh BYEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Of course the Meihems just ignore her!

Real Life Panda Alert!

Xing Er, lately of Copenhagen Zoo, decided that his enclosure was just way too boring, and he went walkabout in the zoo. He climbed a metal pole to make his escape (I spit on your tree guards!!!!). While there have been numerous red pandas that have managed at least a temporary scamper to freedom, this is the first time that I have heard of a giant panda making an escape. (Other than Pinky, but she had a secret tunnel!) You go, Xing Er!!!

We are all getting tired of staying at home!

“Hey Lun Lun, would you pick up if you’re there…”

“When did you say you were sending the car for the girls????”

Life at Chez Mei is never dull! Even in a pandemic quarantine. Especially in a pandemic quarantine!

Let’s look in, shall we?

Pinky: six an’ sebben make even ME look good!

Nooz from Felty Panda Central:

I’m starting some experimenting with some new pandas! Pictures to come soon, and also some fun swag with every order while supplies last. More on this later!

Stay safe everyone!

When Enough Fun is More Than Enough!

Poor Mommee Mei…She generously invited the Meihems and Six and Sebben, the Cublanta twins, to come and stay with Bubba and Pinky, thinking that they would keep Pinky distracted and under control. Hahahahahahahaha! Me thinks Mommee Mei is having a bit of a memory problem.

Perhaps it’s time for all the twins to go home…

Can you say, “make my booting a double?”

Well bless their hearts!
