Yes, once again it’s Fabulous Furry Friday, not to mention Good Friday (not at the Panda Kindergarten, mind you, since they are rarely good) AND it it is not only Easter Eve Eve, but also April Fool’s day Eve Eve! I bet you didn’t know those were a thing.

Before we get into today’s encore presentations, I wanted to thank our good friends Ellie and Edmond for giving a shout out to the Panda Chronicles! Huzzah! They host a natural science for kids blog, and yesterday, their feature presentation was about…ta-da…PANDAS!!!!! Cool, huh?

WE are ALL endangered!

Can we talk for just a minute, about all the hundreds of thousands, and maybe millions of people who turned out for The March 24th #MarchForOurLives? As someone who came of age in the late 60’s and early 70’s and spent my fair share of time marching and protesting, I was so proud, so heartened (is that a word?) to see these very articulate young men and women get up in front of 100’s of thousands of people in DC and other cities around the country and around the world.

For those of you who think that these teenagers can’t possibly be this smart, this articulate, this organized (and I know that is not anyone who regularly reads these pages) I say, you are living in a dream world. Who more than this generation, raised on social media, over-scheduled and over organized within an inch of their lives, who could be better equipped to lead this movement? Emma Gonzales moved me to tears with her speech and her silence, representing the amount of time it took the gunman to kill 17 of her classmates and teachers. She is my new hero.

Pinky Knows How to Work a Crowd

Recently, one of my friends in the Pandasphere suggested that Pinky would enjoy crowd surfing, and that got me thinking…

And speaking of a crowd…..

Way to go, to everyone who attended one of the March For Life events around the world. I was so glad to see there was a large turnout in DC, with estimates of over 1 million people! I think Seattle had a good turnout. Our local demonstration was small, but enthusiastic. Now we need to make sure all these potential new voters get registered and vote! The times they are a changing, indeed!

Meanwhile, what is Pinky up to?

It’s Panda Scout Cookie Time!!!

I was in the ferry line the other day, and I noticed that the Girl Scouts were out selling cookies! They had a captive audience, which changed every half hour. Smart! There was a whole group of scouts and moms/leaders, with multiple teams going out so that they could hit each row of cars as they waited for the next ferry. They also had a centrally located outpost with van and awning to protect the cookies in case of rain.

PROTECT THE COOKIES!!!!!!

Before we get to our Fabulous Furry Friday Encore Presentation, I would like to pat myself on the back for breaking my previous world record in cookie balancing! Yes, I may have noted that I am the world record holder in Cookie Balancing (a soon to be olympic sport!!!) My previous world record was 23 seconds (timed from the start of nibbling a stable base, to the moment you attain balance for your cookie. The cookie then has to remain standing for at least 8 seconds.)

The new world record…ta da!!!!…is 18 SECONDS!!!!!!

But What About My Emotional Support Tarantula?

It was pointed out to me that I forgot to re-run the classic ‘toon about the annual changes to and from Daylight Savings Times. My bad! I will fix that forthwith. But first, I was amazed to read of all the exotic kinds of animals that people were claiming were emotional support animals so that they could take them on airplanes. While I do believe that there are people who.need this kind of calming influence when they travel, some of these animals could cause some stress to their fellow travelers.

I’ve lived in neighborhoods with peacocks and peahens, and I did not find them relaxing at all!

Yes, Pinky. I’m sure Mr. Bun IS emotionally supportive!

Fabulous Furry Friday presents…

Don’t ask me how I know this:

One other piece of advice for those visiting the PanDiego Zoo (Home of the real Wu Self!) and that is this: Do NOT, under any circumstances, ride of the Skyfari cable cars when it’s raining. Even a seemingly innocent misty rain becomes a driving gale while you are suspended 60 feet above the ground, moving horizontally at a fairly spiffy pace, high above the zoo. Just sayin’.

I mean I would say so if I, or anyone I actually know, had direct experience of this phenomenon. 

Meanwhile, on with today’s round up of ‘toons! And what better way to start than with Wu’s birthday ‘toon from last July!

Mittens is STILL telling anyone who will listen that his inauguration had the highest attendance in the history of the universe. I don’t THINK so!

Huzzah and congratulations to all the students who observed the peaceful walkout to protest the failure of Congress to enact sensible gun regulations. Could they be failing to act because the NRA donates heavily to some members of Congress? Hmmm? You tell me. I look forward to attending a march on March 24th, to remind Congress that we ARE paying attention to what they do (and don’t do) and plan to vote accordingly.

Notes from the Panda Convention

A good time was had by all at the Panda Convention!

Well, it was a wonderful weekend in PanDiego once again. I saw the Wu Self, Madame Her Royal Highness, the Empress Bai Yun, and even a glimpse from the bridge far above, of the lovely Gao Gao of the extra fuzzy feet. The Panda Convention drew panda fans from around the globe! Australia, Canada, Switzerland, as well as points from all corners of the US. (Literally!) Washington State, Florida, Maine, and southern California were all represented as well as many points in between.

We had a wonderful panda presentation by Nate Wintle of PDX Wildlife who attended with his delightful 8 year old daughter Dee, who has been best friends with pandas since (before) she was born. Alas, the director of PDX Wildlife, Meghan Martin-Wintle, could not be there as she was in China supervising the incoming interns. Meg is also the mom of the delightful Dee, and with parents like this, it’s no wonder she is smart as a whip.

I have to tell you one of my favorite moments of the weekend…

I…um…strong armed Nate into buying a copy of The Pinky Defense for Dee, and she proceeded to read out loud, the story of KittySue and the Three Pandas. She got to the end, and looked a tad puzzled at the last panel:

The Panda Convention!

Yes, Virginia, there is a Panda Convention and it took place this past weekend in Sunny Pandiego California, at the home of one of my favorite pandas, the one, the only, the adorable Wu Self! (Pinky: I thought I was your favorite panda, unka bob!) (Can someone check out why Pinky seems to have comment privileges in my posts? She’s not supposed to have access to my computer!)

And who knew there was a Panda Talent event at the convention?

Can you believe the talent being displayed here? Surely Bob should get an Oscar or something!

…The Wonderful World of Wu!

Yes, while Pinky tries very hard to have EVERY ‘toon and post be about her, there ARE other pandas out there! (Pinky: dat is just not true, unka bob!) So for today’s encore presentation, let’s look back at some of Mr. Wu’s feature ‘toons, beloved last son of Bai Yun and Gao Gao, from sunny PanDiego!

The 2018 Olympics May Be Over, But the Spirit of Competition Lives On!

Okay. Don’t laugh. But I really have mastered the art of cookie balancing. Using Archway’s Windmill Almond cookies, my current record is 23 seconds to nibble a straight edge at the bottom of the cookie, and balance it on edge so that it stands for 10 seconds or more. Go ahead. You try it if you think it’s so easy. I’ll wait.

And now…going for the gold!!!

In other feats of athletic competition, I was working outside yesterday, trimming an out of control Lonicera Baggerson’s Gold (kind of looks like a boxwood, for you non-gardeners) and I had a little six inch piece of branch. Rather than walk over to the trash can where I was putting cuttings to dump in one of my many compost piles, I threw it (left handed!!!- I am right handed) from about 15 feet and sunk the shot perfectly. Am I ready for an award winning sporting career or what?!?! First, cookie balancing and now this!!!! Huzzah!
