We R Endangered

Well, wouldn’t you know it…today is Endangered Species Day! A day when people gather around the table and invite pandas to have as many cuppycakes as they want…and…no? That’s not what endangered species day is all about? Okay, smarty pants…why don’t all you folks down at the Pan Diego Zoo tell us what the day is supposed to be about if it’s not about giving pandas cuppycakes.

We R Endangered, for crying out loud!

This was way too much fun. :o)

Artists are also on the threatened species list…

But it’s not just pandas and..um…a bunch of other animals that are endangered. As an artist and a writer, I have been feeling kind of endangered myself these past few years, and one of the effects of that has been that at times (only at times, mind you) I have felt like I was losing my creative focus.

I have often mentioned, from time to time, people from whom I have taken inspiration. I include my favorite painters, as well as those writers and cartoonists who have helped to shape The Panda Chronicles, even if they didn’t know they were doing it. One of those people is Jessica Abel, who along with her husband Matt Madden wrote Drawing with Words and Writing with Pictures.  Along with Scott McCloud, who wrote the Understanding Comics series, these books helped to make the Panda Chronicles become what it has today.

The discovery of the terrible crime in the pandas’ house…

Most artists and writers stumble from their path. They endlessly refresh their Twidder feeds, or they play computer solitaire when they should be painting. Goodness, ha ha! I don’t know anyone who does that…it’s just something…um…I heard someone say once, in passing. So, it was with great interest when Jessica started writing in her newsletter, about a book she was writing on creative focus, and how to get out of your creative rut. It’s called Growing Gills: How to Find Creative Focus When you’re Drowning in Daily Life.

I’m still working my way through the book, but I’m already finding it inspiring and helpful. Each chapter ends with an exercise to help you first, to see where you are sliding off the rails, and secondly take positive, concrete steps to re-jigger your behavior, to get back on track. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited (if you have that) for free! But I think when I do my next book purchase, that the paperback copy will make a nice addition to my reference library.

My goal is to read a chapter a week, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter. Maybe I’ll even report on my progress here, every once in a while. If you’d like to know more about Jessica and her work, please visit her website here. She’s also offering a 5 day free mini course called Creative Compass starting this very next week! Check it out here.

In the meantime…let’s have some more ‘toons! And while we are talking about creative pursuits, here’s some pandas being creative!

You say sumi-e, I say Tsunami

After all, the playings the thing….

Remember, without pandas, there can be no panda satire!

Here’s hoping that you have had a wonderful Endangered Species Day! Makes a nice change from obsessing over the West Wing soap opera, right?

And don’t forget, in a few short weeks, we’ll be launching our next Kickstarter project, for an extra special art and pandas trip to China!!!

Fabulous Furry Friday

Pinky and Bubba have gotten so much attention recently, so I thought we would give Bob and Mehitabel a chance to shine in today’s edition of Fabulous Furry Friday! Put your paws together and give a big Panda Chronicles welcome for this encore presentation, featuring our favorite cartoon panda! (and cat. Don’t forget the cat.)

Have a happy weekend, everyone. Monday you can go back to worrying about the downfall of Democracy as we know it.

There has been a disturbance in the force

It was bad enough that we lost David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and so many other great talents last year, including Carrie Fisher (and her mom, Debbie Reynolds!) but the final insult to injury was the loss of my beloved cat, Mehitabel. She has been a part of my life and a part of my art since before I can remember, well…at least for the last 20 years. The force was strong in that cat, and she pretty much had me wrapped around her dainty little paws.

Because she was such a part of my life and such an important member of my cast of characters here at the Panda Chronicles, I decided that she would remain here. After all, I am not letting go of Pinky or the Meihems, despite their recent (Meihems) and impending (Pinky) departure to China. So Mehitabel will remain, in a somewhat metaphysical state. After all, SOMEONE has to keep all those pandas in line!

Hey, it’s my cartoon, I can have anyone I want in it, okay???

Sorry I’m “late”

I just read of a cartoonist who has found a way to use her talent to contribute to some of her favorite non profits. It really is pretty brilliant, and so I am going to say a big, pandy thank you to her, and then STEAL HER IDEA!!!!! I have been feeling the pain of not having the resources to donate meaningfully to these organizations, and this is a way to see if I can make a difference.

So here’s the deal:
Donate $50 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get a signed copy of a cartoon, with a hand drawn sketch on it.
Donate $100 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get 2 signed cartoons with a hand drawn sketch on them.
Donate $500 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get an original hand drawn cartoon of my* choice (unframed) (* you can tell me who your favorite panda characters are and I will make a selection based on that info)

Just send me a screenshot of your donation receipt dated between January 31st and February 28th, along with your mailing address, and I will send them out as I receive them. US addresses only, please. Send info/receipt to yourbrainonpandas@gmail.com. Let’s see if we can raise some $$ for these organizations! Pandas are standing by!

Join the Panda March this Saturday!

If you want to be where the action is the day after THE DAY AFTER, be sure to join one of the Women’s Marches that will taking place around the country. And yes, I put the phrase The Day After in scary SHOUTYCAPS/ all bold typing in reference to one of those post apocalyptic movies about the end of the world. The pandas are planning to march and I hope you will too. We are having a local march in Langley and I plan to attend. Maybe we’ll all go out for coffee and cuppycakes after. It’s shaping up to be that kind of week.

Join the #WePreferPinky Movement today!

I’d like to thank writer Deborah Underwood for coming up with the term “SHOUTYCAPS” to describe the feeling you get when someone writes in all capital letters. That’s why they pay her the big bucks. (Actually, hardly any writers for children make big bucks, so if you are looking for some really fun books for kids in your life, do check out her books at your local bookstore or on her website! She and her cat will thank you!)

31 Days of Pandas: The Year in Review

We are grinding down to the very last days of the year, and what better thing to do than to review some of my favorite ‘toons from the past 12 months? Also I have run out of Mini Bob travel photos, so there is that too!

One of the things that happened this last year was I got an agent! Huzzah! Right now he is working on getting my graphic novel (about pandas, of course) out into the world. One of the things I am learning, is that publishing is a long process, but when you have someone who loves your story, you have a better chance that the right home will be found for it. Pseudo thumbs crossed. You’ll be the first to know when that happens.

Here’s my ‘toon about finding my agent…

Do you smell smoke?

I like to listen to the radio to find ideas for ‘toons. Here’s one about a new study on “healthy eating.” It was a study. It must be true.

Inspired by a TRUE story!

And here is another story about an important scientific finding...No fake news stories here!

Well, it is kind of funny, isn’t it?

Ha ha! This still makes me laugh! Tune in tomorrow for another brand new ‘toon!

Day 13: 31 Days of Pandas

OO OO OO! I just love it! It is Day 13 of 31 Days of Pandas!!!! 13:31! It’s reversible. Okay, okay, I’ll stop being a silly goose about numbers. But did I mention that yesterday was Six and Seven’s hundredth day birthday? They got their names yesterday and they are Ya Lun and Xi Lun so now they can have the nickname the LUNatics!!! Goes with Meihem, right?

Meanwhile, Mini Bob is on the move…

31 days

Mini Bob has an unerring eye for a cool set of wheels.

Meanwhile life in the real world gets weirder and weirder. I don’t have the illusion that the electoral College is going to wake up in 6 days and decide to elect HRC. But isn’t it completely absurd that He Who Must Not Be Named is
1) blocking recount efforts
2) denying that it is troubling that Russia may have hacked into voting systems, or at least has attempted to influence the election
3) claiming that he is “like, a smart person” so he does not need to attend more than one intelligence briefing a week
4) and that the CIA has made mistakes in the past, so now they are not in the least credible?

I don’t know about you, but I have the sinking feeling that this may not turn out well.

The Great Escape

One of the things I love about Pinky is that she always has a plan. If one plan crashes against an immovable object (say, Mommee, for instance) Pinky always has plan B, C, D, or Z at the ready! And there has never been a den that she could not escape from. Bubba, you still have much to learn from Pinky!

And now, The Great Escape!

The Great Escape

Of COURSE Pinky has a secret tunnel!

Pinky never ceases to amaze!

Are you enjoying A Halloween Carol? Be sure to tune in Friday for part 2! And while this story has not yet appeared in print, did you know there are SIX Panda Chronicle books available to have for your very own? yep, that’s right! You can get them here!

Pacific Northwest Pandas

Ever since I became a pandaholic (I’m not ashamed of my love), one of the great causes for sadness in my life is the fact that I have to get on a plane if I want to go and visit pandas. Not that I have any wish to live in Washington DC, especially as they are in the grasp of Snomaggedon 2016, but why, oh why can’t we have pandas in Seattle?

Well, it turns out that people who can get things done are actually talking to folks in China who hand out pandas (the Office of Panda Procurement and Proliferation). We have no idea if they will be successful in bringing pandas to Washington State, but be assured that we are keeping our fuzzy ears to the ground on this one!

I bet Seattle Pandas would vote for Bob!

I bet Seattle Pandas would vote for Bob!

I can also attest to the fact that bamboo grows really well around here, so if there were Pacific Northwest Pandas they would have plenty of bamboo to choose from! The weather here is very conducive to panda proliferation, so what’s holding us back (I mean besides vast sums of money)? So, if you are a Seattle area millionaire with a fondness for the fuzzy black and white bears, now is the time to come forward and say “I want pandas!!!!!”

There remains only one crucial piece of this campaign to bring pandas to the Pacific Northwest and that is…(wait for it) a really good Twitter hashtag! Please add your suggestions for a Twitter hashtag to the comments section and I will give the contributor of the best hashtag suggestion a signed copy of my latest book, The Panda Chronicles Book 6: We R Endangered (sorry, US entrants only, but even if you don’t live in the US, please share your suggestions. I’ll come up with something less expensive to mail if you have the winning suggestion.)

Till next time!

Be the Bear!
Bob T. Panda

A late note: An alert reader brought to my attention, the news that Chuck Todd on Meet the Press not only played the video of Tian Tian frolicking in the snow, but suggested that maybe a panda should be president. I am not making this up. She thought it might be code for “Vote 4 Pinky” but it could just as easily be “Hey! Why not vote for Bob?”

Day 31: The Ultimate 31 Days of Pandas Post

It has finally arrived! Day 31 of 31 Days of Pandas. As ever, I am grateful to all who have stuck it out, all who have commented, all who have embraced these pandas and welcomed them onto your screen. I am especially grateful to those of you who have bought my books and goodies from my Pandyland Cafe Press store! But mostly, I am grateful that you enjoy what I do here, and have chosen to return.

The life of a creative professional ( a term I am not entirely comfortable with, but it is the closest I can come to what it is I do) is a very uncertain one. Will anyone respond to my work? Will I make enough money to live? Should I have married a dentist, like my parents wanted? Will I have to endure one more family dinner with great Aunt Mildred telling me how successful her daughter is, and how she just bought a vacation home in Hawaii? And what was it you do, again?

I was reminded recently of Neil Gaiman’s commencement speech that he gave at MY alma mater, The University of the Arts,  in 2012.  It’s referred to as “the make good art” speech, and that sums it up. All I want to do is make good art, and maybe tell some good stories along with it. The video is about 20 minutes long, but well worth it. It’s inspiring as all get out! Go watch it. We’ll wait right here…

Meanwhile, it’s New Year’s eve at the panda kindergarten…

The panda kindergarten at their best…or is that worst?

And we still have to finish the 12 Days of Crispmoss…
