About Panda in Chief

Anne Belov paints, writes, makes prints, and is the founder of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. You can find her paintings at the Rob Schouten Gallery and Fountainhead Gallery, her cartoons on The Panda Chronicles, and her new book here. She also writes regularly for The Whidbey Life Magazine, a free journal of art and culture on Whidbey Island. Her main regret in life is that there is no MacArthur Grant for Panda Satire.

Day 5- 31 Days of Pandas

It’s Day 5 and Pinky is back!!!! Unfortunately for her, so are the Meihems, and they made a list, checked it twice, and brought it along so they could be sure that they didn’t forget any of Pinky’s crimes! And there are a lot of them!

I’m making a list, and it’s really big…

Not even Pinky is above the law. And if SHE isn’t, then Mittens sure as heck isn’t either!

Day 4- 31 Days of Pandas

It’s Day 4 of 31 Days of Pandas! The panda socks have arrived, and I’m going to spend this evening  packing and organizing (and then watching movies and felting pandas!) Tomorrow there will be another new ‘toon and then on Friday, there will be more from Pinky in Wonderland.

The post about the lions that ate the rhino poachers showed up on Twitter this week, so I thought that today’s encore presentation could be this series from The Animal Justice League!

Karma is a bitch, isn’t it?

Ooooooo-oooo-oooo-we have food tonight…

Here kitty kitty…nice kitty…

“We just want to talk!”

and then there was this story…

What goes around, comes around.

Day 3 – 31 Days of Pandas

You knew it had to happen sooner or later: Pinky would declare herself above the law! It was bad enough that Mittens did it, now Pinky is getting her inner criminal on!

So what if pandas are endangered! Does that mean they are above the law?

Obeying Pinky is not in the Consditooshun!

My annual note about Panda Commerce:

I started writing these ‘toons in early 2008, after reading an article in the Atlantic Magazine about the Panda ranches in China. I did not know where this compulsion to draw pandas was going to take me, I just knew I had to draw them. And so I drew, and eventually I started this website.

Because one of the reasons I started drawing panda ‘toons was because I was depressed because the economy had crashed and no one was buying art, it was important to me that this panda portal would be forever free to anyone who wanted to read my ‘toons. If they could help me, well, maybe they would cheer up other people who needed to be cheered and might not have the resources to subscribe to something as silly as panda satire.

So here we are, 11 years later! I still keep this blog and the archives available and free to to all. I do, however, spend time and resources drawing these toons and keeping them here for you. And so, I have run several Kickstarter campaigns, I now have a page on Redbubble where you can buy things with pandas on them, and my first non-Kickstarter Sock project was a big success. Buying things with my pandas on them, through me, Kickstarter, or Redbubble helps to support my work with Panda Satire.

My ‘toon collections, which are all available on Amazon,  also help to keep me in ink and paper. I hope eventually to get my graphic novels published through traditional publishing, but that is kind of the long game. For those who really want something special, I do sell my original ‘toons, once they have been published in a book.

For those that have the means and inclination to buy things with pandas, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who don’t, I hope you’ll keep coming back to read the new ‘toons, comment on the goings on of Pinky, the Meihems, Bubba, and all the rest of the pandas. Art is not art until it has been seen and appreciated. Everyone of you are welcome here. It wouldn’t be nearly so much fun without you!

Panda on! It’s time for 31 Days of Pandas!!!!

Day 2- 31 Days of Pandas

Day 2 of 31 Days of Pandas brings us the next 5 installments from that holiday classic…

Pinky in Wonderland!!!

(For episodes 1-5, look HERE!)

Well dis is a pickle an’ a half!

It would be better with a little salt and balsamic vinegar, but not bad!

We know just how you feel, Pinky. We feel the same.

What could be behind that door? Stay tuned, panda fans!

And what magical place has Pinky found, as she opens the tiny door?

Tune in tomorrow for an all new ‘toon starring….Pinky! (What were you expecting?)

Panda on, everyone!

And remember! Buy Stuff with Pandas!

Sock it to MEEEEEEEEEEE!

It is day one of 31 Days of Pandas!

Are you excited? I know I am! I am excited for so many things! First, 31 Days of Pandas is my excuse to go full panda for an entire month. Secondly (and very importantly,) the socks are on their way to me even as we speak! The folks down at Pin Game Strong are great to work with. One of the many kind things they do, is to send pictures of the finished items as they receive them, before sending them on to me.

What could be better than wearing pandas on your feet?

I should have the socks in my hot little paws by Tuesday afternoon. My goal is to get them packed and shipped by Friday. There are about a half dozen people who have not responded to their invoices yet, so if you are one of them, please check your spam folder to see if the invoice is there, and pay the PayPal invoice promptly. I won’t be shipping unpaid orders. I’ll send out another reminder on Monday.

Another thing I am very excited about is my new shop on Redbubble!

I’m still getting set up, but there are a whole bunch of fun things you can buy with my pandas on them, AND they are having a site wide 25%-60% off sale, which means YOU can buy MORE Stuff with PANDAS!!!! Here’s the LINK! I have things with Pinky, Bubba, Mr. Wu AND things from Pandamorphosis (For those who like more fine art pandas!)

Head over to the Panda Chronicle Page on Redbubble!

Meanwhile, back at the pandas for today’s presentation for 31 Days of Pandas! How about an Encore presentation of Pinky in Wonderland?

Happy Friendsgiving

It’s time for that holiday that is celebrated in the good old US of A, you know, the one where you get together with family you don’t particularly want to see, argue with Uncle George about what the current “resident” of the WH is really up to, the one where you eat way too much of food you don’t really like and then it’s time for PIE!

Once I moved far, far from home, and got to have this holiday extravaganza with friends of my own choosing, my attitude changed somewhat. (I do like pie, and why doesn’t anyone still make the sweet potato casserole with melted marshmallows on top?) I continue to be thankful for spending time with people I love.

Last Supper, Cupcakes, DaVinci

Princess Pinky says, she is thankful for cuppycakes and da panda kindygarten and her magical wand!

And now we know about all the cultural/genocidal implications of our first National Holiday, which I won’t get into here, but need to be acknowledged. That makes celebrating this holiday kind of cringe-worthy, and yet…

I think it is a good thing to be thankful for the many things that have come our way. If we can separate the history of white europeans invading these shores, and all that followed afterward (because, if you aren’t an indigenous person, you are an immigrant no matter how many generations ago your ancestors got here) I think that is okay to have a holiday in which we acknowledge what we are thankful for.

So here’s a list of some of the things I’m thankful for:

Friends
Artistic talent
Pandas
Good health
A home of my own
Trees that surround my house
Pandas
People who appreciate (and buy!) my art, my writing and panda satire
Did I remember to mention pandas?
Friends who like to visit pandas
Cuppycakes
Books
Art museums
Cats!
Scottish terriers
A convenient grocery store
#PandaTwitter
Coffee

I could go on!

Coffee tastes better when you have it with Pinky!

But meanwhile, it’s time to get ready for 31 Days of Pandas!!!!

That’s something we should all be thankful for! As we head into full on impeachment mode, we may be watching, in real time, the 45th “president” of these here United States dissolve, self destruct, maybe even burst into flames in front of our very eyes! We are going to need all the funny we can get if we want to get through this alive!

Be the Bear

PS: There is still time to get in on my fabulous felt panda-palooza! For all the info, read this post!

And Now, For Our Rendition of Bear d’Lune…

This news story came across the transom a few weeks ago, but what with all the criming and corruption coming out of DC, It got a little distracting around here. You knew we would not let this story go unremarked upon, by our favorite grizzly correspondents, recently returned from their bus driving adventures!

And now, BearNooZ presents….

Maybe the bear was a fan of Phillip Glass…

Sock Update!

I just got word that panda socks are headed for the PGS warehouse, which means they should be in my hot little hands by Friday December 6th! If I’ve already received your paid invoice via PayPal, the socks will be headed your way the following week. If you have not yet responded to your invoice, do it now, so you’ll get your socks before Christmas!

We hardly got to know you…

I know everyone is still feeling very sad, at the departure of our “little bear”. It has been bittersweet, what with all the posts on Twidder and Fezbook of Bubba when he was weally widdle. Hopefully, another round of ‘toons of Bubba’s childhood along with the trials and tribulations of being the little brother to an international super star and Smifsonian Icon, will make everyone just a little less sad.

Thanks for all who posted the pictures of him in his new home. I really loved the BFX base. We spent 2 days there visiting pandas. The yards are large (at least as large as Bubba’s yard back home) and full of mature trees. From the pictures, it looked like many of the trees in his yard did not have tree guards, so he gets to do his favorite activity, climbing. While he had a similar reaction as Pinky had to his first introduction to panda bread, he seems happy about all the bamboo shoots!

Let’s have some Bubba ‘toons, okay?

And then there was the day he had to figure out what to wear for his debut…

How IS this different from Pinky’s normal bossiness?

Funny how Pinky sneaks in to almost all of Bubba’s ‘toons!

My! You are quite the good looking fellow!

You keep using that word “share”, mommee!

Bubba: but why should I be in trubble?

I’ll talk! I’ll talk!

Pinky and the Twinkies, eh?

“If Pinky is grounded, can I have her dessert?”

uh oh…

What do you mean you left a note saying they are at my house?

Bubba is having so much fun with his new friends!

Hey! Where did Bubba and Mr. Bun go?

I hope you enjoyed this extra big Birthday Season* dose of pandas! Like bubba says, we might be da victims of a repressive regime, so we need all the pandas (and laughs) we can get! Panda on everyone!

Be da (widdle) Bear!
Bob T Panda

*Yes, it is STILL my birthday season!!!!

It’s Unconsditooshunal!

The impeachment inquiry labors on, with dedicated career civil servants and military veterans making the hard choice to speak out about corrupt doings coming from the Grifter in Chief, and the R’s try to throw as much shade, mud, and dancing elephants at them, since they have nothing more than “if the president does it, it’s not corrupt” as a defense.

Meanwhile, real life Bei Bei has begun his long journey to his ancestral homeland, and we are all sad! It is injury on top of the insult of this “administration.”

Even Pinky would do a better job, me thinks…

Pinky can’t be indicted!

Panda on!
Bob T Panda!

Don’t forget to check out Tuesday’s post to find out how you can get your own hand felted panda, AND help save Democracy! Check it out HERE!

There is Blood in the Water

As we slide into week 2 of the public impeachment hearings, we start to see the cracks in the foundation of this not very funny Fun House that HWMNBN has built around him. Dedicated career civil servants are not allowing themselves to be bullied into silence, facts the Orange Machine tried to suppress will not be silent! People are being thrown under the bus!

And who is driving the bus? Why, it’s none other than…

Our favorite grizzlies are doing “The Bus”!

Making fun of current events and various politicians, and rage tweeting on Twidder are not enough!

We need to get out and vote in races large and small. One of the things that have become all too apparent, is that those down ballot races have a lot to do with the current condition we find ourselves in: gerrymandered voting districts that favor the GOP, even when state voting totals lean more toward the Democrats.

One of the byproducts of gerrymandering and skewed representation in state legislature, is voter suppression. Much of this voter suppression disadvantages and targets people of color and underrepresented populations. Stacey Abrams, who recently lost the race for Georgia’s governor’s race, has started an organization to combat voter suppression nation wide. It’s called Fair Fight, and that leads me too…needle felted pandas!

I’m having a lot of fun making these little felted pandas! While I definitely have my favorites, and definitely plan to keep some, I’m making more of them every week. So, I thought to myself, “how could these little pandas do something worthwhile and valiant, to make the world a better place?”

So here’s my idea…

For every donation to Fair Fight of $100 or more, made between now and December 1st, I will send you an adorable, one of a kind needle felted panda! Now, this can’t be an unlimited offer, because I only have so much time to make these little bears, so at some point if this proves a popular thing, I will have to say enough. Also, because I am still somewhat under a financial cloud, if you want to send me $10 for postage and materials, via my PayPal link (See the Bear in the Bowler hat on the sidebar) it would be most appreciated.

Choice of panda will be by the whim of the artist. These are truly not available anywhere. I hope the thought of having an artist made panda will be an incentive (I mean besides preventing the downfall of Democracy) to make a contribution to Fair Fight. Voting is the last best chance we have to turn this bus around.

To claim a panda, just send me proof of donation to yourbrainonpandas (at) gmail (dot) com and eventually you will get a panda in the mail! (You’ll also have to send me your address so I can send you a panda!) Huzzah! tell ’em Unka Bob sent you!

Be the bear!
