About Panda in Chief

Anne Belov paints, writes, makes prints, and is the founder of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. You can find her paintings at the Rob Schouten Gallery and Fountainhead Gallery, her cartoons on The Panda Chronicles, and her new book here. She also writes regularly for The Whidbey Life Magazine, a free journal of art and culture on Whidbey Island. Her main regret in life is that there is no MacArthur Grant for Panda Satire.

Bubba Breaks out: Our Story Continues…

Oh me, oh my! Bubba has broken the chains of his good bear persona, (or is that bearsona?) and headed north to say goodbye to his true love, before she moves all the way across the country! Can you blame him? Surely Mommee Mei will take his broken heart into consideration, as our story continues.

But let’s see what happens next!

our story

Mommee pandas have laser vision. Don’t even think you can hide, Bubba.

But at least there will be cuppycakes!!!!

Stay tuned for more from our story on Wednesday. But also know, that we have been taking copious notes from the revelations of graft and corruption in the Drawers of the Cabinet of Doom. Not to name names, but in this un-protective environment, I think you know of whom we speak. It has given Pinky ideas. Too many ideas!

Celebrating 10 years of Panda Satire

Today, we’re celebrating 10 years of panda satire! I didn’t actually start posting ‘toons online until 2009, but I started drawing panda satire in 2008 after seeing an article about the panda ranches written by James Fallows.

Let’s take a look at some of the early ‘toons, have a few cuppycakes, and celebrate 10 years of Being the Bear!

Ever wondered where all these pandas came from?

Is it that time already?

Can Mehitabel endure the tidal wave of pandas?

You can’t be too careful!

Ha ha! Here’s a toothbrush!

Don’t forget to tune in Sunday for the next installment of “The Toronto Farewell!”

The long, long, LONG Goodbye

So, you remember that story I started telling you about Bubba and Ping going off to say goodbye to Yip and Jip, just before they went off and moved to Calgary, and then some other stuff happened, like the Panda Olympics and Chinese New Years, and I started telling you some other stories? Well, think of it as kind of a long goodbye from Bubba to his good friends to the north, Jip and Yip.

To remind you of where we left them…

Packing is such a chore! And a surprise visit from a friend can make it go so much faster!

So, now that you remember where we left everyone…

long goodbye

The Long Goodbye, or “Toronto Farewell”

Stay tuned for more of our story on Sunday! And don’t forget Fabulous Furry Friday, coming to you on…um…now what day was that again?

I Pity the April Fool

So says Bob (Mr) T Panda! It is April Fools Day and Easter Sunday, which makes me think of all sorts of tasteless jokes, which I will just leave to your imaginations.

One of my most memorable April Fool’s Days was during my student years when I was one of the artists at the Artists for the Environment Foundation at the Delaware Water Gap National Park. The director was…um…a bit humorless, so we decided to…shall we say, celebrate the season. We took down all the paintings from the wall and replaced them with freshly gessoed canvases, blocked the drive with our cars, there may have been some vaseline on the doorknob to his office. That memory escapes me. I’m sure we did some other things as well, but fortunately, I have forgotten them. I’m sure the statute of limitations has expired, so no harm, no foul!

Bring on the Chocolate Bunnies and Marhsymallow Peeps!

April Fools Day has always been my favorite holiday

It’s Fabulous Furry Friday!

Yes, once again it’s Fabulous Furry Friday, not to mention Good Friday (not at the Panda Kindergarten, mind you, since they are rarely good) AND it it is not only Easter Eve Eve, but also April Fool’s day Eve Eve! I bet you didn’t know those were a thing.

Before we get into today’s encore presentations, I wanted to thank our good friends Ellie and Edmond for giving a shout out to the Panda Chronicles! Huzzah! They host a natural science for kids blog, and yesterday, their feature presentation was about…ta-da…PANDAS!!!!! Cool, huh?

Now put down that chocolate bunny and stop stuffing your mouth with peeps so you can read today’s ‘toons!

Huzzah for the Young People!

WE are ALL endangered!

Can we talk for just a minute, about all the hundreds of thousands, and maybe millions of people who turned out for The March 24th #MarchForOurLives? As someone who came of age in the late 60’s and early 70’s and spent my fair share of time marching and protesting, I was so proud, so heartened (is that a word?) to see these very articulate young men and women get up in front of 100’s of thousands of people in DC and other cities around the country and around the world.

For those of you who think that these teenagers can’t possibly be this smart, this articulate, this organized (and I know that is not anyone who regularly reads these pages) I say, you are living in a dream world. Who more than this generation, raised on social media, over-scheduled and over organized within an inch of their lives, who could be better equipped to lead this movement? Emma Gonzales moved me to tears with her speech and her silence, representing the amount of time it took the gunman to kill 17 of her classmates and teachers. She is my new hero.

Pinky Knows How to Work a Crowd

Recently, one of my friends in the Pandasphere suggested that Pinky would enjoy crowd surfing, and that got me thinking…

And speaking of a crowd…..

Way to go, to everyone who attended one of the March For Life events around the world. I was so glad to see there was a large turnout in DC, with estimates of over 1 million people! I think Seattle had a good turnout. Our local demonstration was small, but enthusiastic. Now we need to make sure all these potential new voters get registered and vote! The times they are a changing, indeed!

Meanwhile, what is Pinky up to?

Thank you to Anne Lane for this great idea!

It’s Panda Scout Cookie Time!!!

I was in the ferry line the other day, and I noticed that the Girl Scouts were out selling cookies! They had a captive audience, which changed every half hour. Smart! There was a whole group of scouts and moms/leaders, with multiple teams going out so that they could hit each row of cars as they waited for the next ferry. They also had a centrally located outpost with van and awning to protect the cookies in case of rain.

PROTECT THE COOKIES!!!!!!

Before we get to our Fabulous Furry Friday Encore Presentation, I would like to pat myself on the back for breaking my previous world record in cookie balancing! Yes, I may have noted that I am the world record holder in Cookie Balancing (a soon to be olympic sport!!!) My previous world record was 23 seconds (timed from the start of nibbling a stable base, to the moment you attain balance for your cookie. The cookie then has to remain standing for at least 8 seconds.)

The new world record…ta da!!!!…is 18 SECONDS!!!!!!

And to show that this is real…

Actual balancing cookie!

And because it’s Panda Scout Cookie time…

On my honor, I will try…to eat as many cookies as I possibly can….

But What About My Emotional Support Tarantula?

It was pointed out to me that I forgot to re-run the classic ‘toon about the annual changes to and from Daylight Savings Times. My bad! I will fix that forthwith. But first, I was amazed to read of all the exotic kinds of animals that people were claiming were emotional support animals so that they could take them on airplanes. While I do believe that there are people who.need this kind of calming influence when they travel, some of these animals could cause some stress to their fellow travelers.

I’ve lived in neighborhoods with peacocks and peahens, and I did not find them relaxing at all!

Yes, Pinky. I’m sure Mr. Bun IS emotionally supportive!

And now, that Daylight Savings Time classic…

I Swear (heh) This is true

To Swear or Not to Swear – That is the Question…

I swear I heard the story on NPR, and while I can’t find the exact link, I found a number of articles that talked about a book called Swearing is Good For You. I couldn’t have said it better myself! Of course, that story inspired todays ‘toons. I did find several articles about this study, even if I didn’t find the NPR one. Here’s one of them!~

And me? Well, I’ve been known to curse like a sailor, as they say in some parts, and lately, I have found the news more than inspiring to just let a good long string of them rip.

Can you identify all the bleeped out words? I bet you can!

Well *bleep* and take your *bleep* and stick it *bleep*!!!!
