Pinky has an idea: bear and breakfast !

An Embarrassment of Pandas

Ever since I learned that the collective noun for pandas is “an embarrassment of pandas” I have looked for an excuse to use it here. Of course I learned this on the internet, so, I am not entirely certain that this is correct, but since I couldn’t find anything else* I decided to go with this and hope for the best.

  • I did find the term “a cupboard of pandas”, but since this was in the entirely facetious book, 101 Facts About Pandas, which, among other “facts” classified pandas as a species of walnut, I decided that “cupboard” was probably not correct.

But no matter! One thing that we can be absolutely certain of, is that Pinky will embarrass her mother at any opportunity, especially in public in front of large numbers of people!

Celebrating Lun Lun

It’s true that most of the ‘toons on the Panda Chronicles focus on the younger panda generation. There is more scope for the imagination, as some other “Anne” (with an ‘e’) might have said. But Lun Lun has recently submitted to an ultrasound, which shows not one, but 2 cubs in the oven. I’m trying not to get excited, because there is still a lot that can go wrong with pregnant pandas. But so far, Lun Lun has proved to be a great mom and has had healthy cubs even while…um…their gender identity was sometimes not what it seemed.

It’s My Birthday Too

Well, yesterday was the big party at the National Zoo, with birthday cakes for Pinky and Bubba…um…make that cakes for Pinky and Mei Xiang, since Bubba decided there was way too much hubbub and went back to his den to take a nap and play with some of his presents. We will have a cartoon eventually about the events of the day, but not just yet, because…

The Cake Party Convention is off to a great start!

Well, just between you and me, Pinky is not such a bad sister after all, because when they went home that night (which was Bubba’s Birthday Eve) we witnessed this scene in Bubba’s room….

Fortunately, Bubba’s nanny keepers didn’t let Mei Xiang eat the entire cake, and they brought it inside so that he could enjoy it in his den. Pinky, of course, had a great time with her cake, which she didn’t have to share with anyone!

While I couldn’t be at the party, I’m having a great time seeing everyone’s pictures and videos!

Phexit Exit

Before I bring you the final (we hope) episode of the Phexit Exit, I want to share a report that was shared with me by our roving reporter known only as “Ellen N.” who, while she did not visit the actual pandas while visiting in Edinburgh, Scotland (as opposed to Edinboro PA) did discover a bakery in Blair Atholl that MAKES THE FLOUR FOR PANDA CAKES which the keepers at the Edinburgh Zoo make for Lord and Lady MacBear. Yes, they grind flour according to a top secret recipe that they would not reveal to our intrepid investigator, because if they told her they would have to….

Well, you know.

But while they would not share the secret pandalicious recipe for panda cookies (could these be the fabled Scottish Binky Bars?) she was able to photograph the certificate of Panditude awarded to the bakery by the zoo.

We are not quite done with the incident from the debate between Bob, Pinky, and Mittens. Stuff happened! Names were called! Poofing was done! Someone must be responsible!

Because I only post 2 new ‘toons a week (I do have a few other responsibilities, you know) sometimes events in the real world don’t quite line up with Panda Chronicle time here, so even though the Meihems have already had their birthday party, it will be happening here, next week or so. We have promised Pinky and Bubba that their birthdays will be celebrated in “real time.” Would you mess with a panda who has a magical wand? I didn’t think so!

Meanwhile, Pinky has a few other shenanigans up her sleeve, before her birthday extravaganza/ Cake Party Convention. Stay tuned!

An interlude with ice cream

Oh… the world has been too much with us lately. So many bad things happening in so many places. All I want to do is crawl under the covers, binge watch entire seasons of The Gilmore Girls (how did I not know of this show’s existence before???) and eat a really big bowl of ice cream. What we need now, more than ever, are pandas being pandas.

For those of you who are fans of watching the actual pandas via the panda cam at the Smithsonian National Zoo, you know that the grown up pandas daily get a treat of frozen fruit juice with fruit and carrots and other vegetables frozen into them. Mei Xinag is well known for not sharing her treats (and you wonder where Pinky learned the “no sharing” thing? It was Mom, all the way,) and not only does she not share her treats, she will steal the treats of any panda cub under her control.

Well, two can play at that game.
