With all the news in the news, it’s hard to feel like having fun, but that is what we must do if we are to survive the current madness of “King” Donald. Apparently, He just found out that 4th of July is a holiday, and he “came up with” a great idea for the day.
I hope he doesn’t make attendance mandatory.

Uh oh. I knew when I saw her new tiara (Pinky 2020) that it was a sign of trouble. Big trouble. Mommee Mei might have hoped that Pinky had learned something from her experience 4 years ago, and she did, they were just not the things Mommee Mei wanted her to learn.

Missing Wu…
Mr. Wu was the first baby panda I watched from birth. The following year I watched as the Meihems, and then Pinky were born, but Wu will always be the cubby of my heart. I hope that I get to visit him in China, but sometimes it is hard to track specific pandas. You think they are going to be one place, and then you go, and they have been moved, sometimes the day before.
I know I’ll recover. There are more panda cubbies to watch and love, but they won’t be the Wu Self.

Meanwhile, we wrapped up our successful Bubba and Ping Pin project over on Kickstarter last week! They just celebrated their 10th anniversary last week as well! Follow the link to see some of the amazing projects the’ve done over the years. I’m proud of all the projects I’ve done there, since my first one in 2012. While they have all been modest projects, relatively speaking, they have been significant to me, in the support I received and what I was able to do with it.
Thanks to all of you who supported me, I was able to:
* Travel to Italy for an egg tempera workshop in 2012
* Publish the very first collection of the Panda Chronicle ‘toons in 2012
* Publish Pandamorphosis in 2014
* Travel to China to see pandas (including actual Pinky) and create a series of artworks on my return in 2017
* Create the first of the Pin series (Starring Pinky!!!!!) in 2019
* Create the second Pin project with Bubba and Ping Ping; in 2019

We at the Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire never miss a chance to join what ever punny moooovement is happening out on the inter webs, and this one is just so much fun! For those (panda) history buffs among you, you should know that this weeks marks the 47th anniversary of the Nixon Pandas arrival in Washington DC. I count myself among those who saw these labeled bears in person (bearson?) in the late ’80’s, a few years before the passing of Ling Ling.
As such, it is the custom here at the Panda Chronicles to replay the cartoon I wrote, commemorating the 40th anniversary of their arrival. Enjoy!

Allow me to pontificate a little schmoopilly here…
While there is a lot of work and planning in putting together a crowd funding campaign, there is also a LOT of fun involved too. I love designing little things from my drawings, but what I love most is interacting with you all!
When I see names that I know from Fezbook and Twidder, and even from real life, I get a little thrill. It’s almost like we are having a conversation: Hey! I like what you’re doing here! I wanna make sure you can keep doing it!…Chatting back and forth in the messages makes me feel a little less isolated in my studio. And to all the new people, whose names I don’t recognize, thank you for climbing aboard the panda bus!
Bubba’s pin! Funded in just over 3 hours!
So very Bubba, right?
And since we funded so quickly, I thought we should up the ante with a little stretch goal…visit us at Kickstarter today and climb aboard!

Hope is the antidote to despair…
I’m feeling a little short on hope, to be honest. It feels like the world is spinning out of control and that the proliferation of evil is increasing exponentially, and those that bring hope and joy and help and comfort into the world have to run triple time with no hope of catching up. There are so many holes in the dam and we just don’t have enough fingers. My heart goes out to the people of New Zealand who have received our unwanted evil export of hate and violence.
Our pathetic excuse of a president says white extremist violence isn’t a thing, and the clueless Howard Schultz thinks that all the people booing and criticizing him means that the people really want him and are excited. Wrong on both counts, you clueless numpties.
But we have to keep hoping, until there is no hope left. Don’t we?

Spring Back, Fall Forward
It’s that time of year again! But Washington State is considering being on DST all year long. Since we are only on Daylight Losing Time for about four months, I’m not unopposed to the idea. The only bad thing, I would not have the reminder/excuse to keep running this ‘toon!

Who would have guessed, on that day back in 2013 that a very (very!) small panda would capture the imagination and delight of not only this nation but the entire world? She has truly taken on a life of her own, both the actual Bao Bao, but also her ‘toon bearsonification, Princess Pinky.
