In Honor of Six and Sebben!

It was Six and Sebben’s birthday this week! Hard to believe they turned FOUR!!! As is traditional at The Panda Chronicles, I like to feature the birthday bears on a Sunday Funday dive into the archives. Is it my fault if Pinky took three weeks to celebrate her birthday? She *might* make an appearance here too!

I’m working on some new felties which I really swear I will get photographed and up on the Buy Stuff with Pandas page…really soon! I went for a last visit to my felty supplier, Abundant Earth Fiber. The coronavirus restrictions meant they had to be closed for more than 4 months. Although they do have a vibrant online store, as a new member of the fiber arts community, their store was like a trip to Wonderland. There were always someone there, either knitting or spinning or just hanging out and ready to talk about wool. They recently made the difficult decision to close their retail space.

The mill lives on and they’ve made arrangements with another local store to carry some of their best selling yarns and fibers, and also to serve as a pick up location for online orders for us locals. As part of their closing, they had a sale on everything in the shop, so I am well stocked up on fiber for now. They are currently offering free shipping on everything ordered online for US addresses, so if you are a knitter, (or felter!) and want to order some stunningly beautiful yarn, I hope you’ll check them out. I don’t get anything for promoting them (other than their continued existence). Their philosophy of small, high quality batch yarn and fibers really resonates with me.

But enough about the real world! Let’s take a look back in the archives for the Life and Times of Six and Sebben!

CubbieTBD is One Week Old!

Yes, we have passed the first week of our new cubbies life. We are relieved, but not complacent! No. A new panda cub is a fragile thing, but so far all appears to be going well. XT4 is getting round, loud, and well loved by Mommee Mei.

I am going to hold on to this good news as hard as I can. I managed not to watch or listen to the RNC #FascistFest, but it was almost impossible not to hear some of the clips or analysis around the inter webs. If people vote early, and are not prevented from voting, we can wrest our country back from the grasping claws of tyranny. We must vote, we must remind our friends to vote, we must correct the vision that the forces of evil want to convince us is real.

And if we are inspired to use bad language, who can blame us?

What week we had! We could almost (almost) ignore the rantings of HWMNBN while we basked in the good feeling glow of the Democratic National Convention. And if that was not enough…

We…have…a…new…baby PANDA!!!!!

Yes, Pinky, we KNOW today is your birthday.

While we wait until I have a chance to create the introductory ‘toon to welcome our new arrival, we do have one or two (ahem!) more ‘toons to celebrate the birthdays of Pinky and Bubba. Mei Xiang, panda mom extraordinaire, had her fourth surviving cub* on Friday, August 21st at 6:35 PM. Do you think she planned so that these 3 siblings would have their birthdays on three consecutive days?

Mei Xiang had a cub that only survived a few hours in 2012, a still born twin to Pinky (Pinky: it was NOT my fault!) and a twin to Bubba who lived 4 days.

It is still Pinky (Bubba: an’ BUBBA’S!!!) Birthday Season, so we have still more ‘toons starring this dynamic duo! (Bubba: don’ forget ping!) Yes, you too, Ping.

But first…some things that inspire…

Yes. I said it. Hope.

Seriously, there has been so little hope available lately. HWMNBN is now trying to disrupt the USPS with his hand picked handmaiden, with mail in voting the target of his malevolence.

But let’s put that aside for one day (after you call or email your Rep and Senators, and maybe your state’s AG while you’re at it.) while we acknowledge we have not one, but TWO things to be hopeful about. I’m not sure which one is more momentous…

Okay, since I got this news first, Joe Biden picked Kamala Harris to be his VP. That news alone made my heart soar, and made the sick feeling in my stomach recede for just a moment. ( Read Connie Schultz’s lovely post on hope here) Hearing their joint announcement helped me believe again that a future is possible. But then…

VETERINARY STAFF FROM DA ZOO SAID THEY SAW A POSSIBLE CUBBY ON MEI XIANG’S ULTRASOUND!!!!!!!

Now, we know from past experience that it’s not a done deal till a cubby (or two) pops out, and even then, success is not guaranteed. But for the moment…

Let’s choose HOPE!

So with no further ado, let’s get on to the celebration of all things Pinky! (Bubba: an’ bubba!!!!!)

Really, Pinky….It’s not nice to tease your little brother.

It is Still Pinky’s (And Bubba’s!!!!) Birthday Season!

It is Sunday, here in these United States, (or more accurately, Untied States) and we are going to attempt to ignore reality for however long it takes to read these ‘toons, celebrating Pinky and Bubba’s birthday season. It is hard to believe that in the real world, Bubba turns 5 this year, and Pinky is Seven! (Sebben: no! i is sebben. shee is pinky!!!)

So, let’s take a deep breath and practice our happiest delusional techniques while we celebrate…

Hold your horses, Pinky! It is still Mr. Wu’s birthday season. We’ll get to yours next week. Meanwhile, if you are still on Fezbook and can follow Patricia Rice’s panda birthday posts, I highly recommend them. Given that she is a real life historian, she writes excellent birthday posts for many of the known captive panda population, including most of our favorite bears.

It is now officially Mr. Wu’s Birthday Season

We all have our first panda, and so they become our favorite panda for all time. Mine is Mr. Wu. I was already watching pandas when Yun Zi and Po were born, but I wasn’t really WATCHING them, if you know what I mean. Maybe they didn’t have the den cams yet, or I didn’t have the internet at my house, (or a MePhone) so my panda watching time was limited.

Watching Mr. Wu from birth, he inspired many ‘toons and had the stage to himself, before the Meihems and then Pinky came on the scene to steal his thunder.

Who can forget…

Of course, Mr. Wu had his adventures with the panda kindergarten…

Well, that’s it for this exciting Wu adventure! This week we lost another shining light in the fight against inequality. Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis passed away this week after a struggle with pancreatic cancer. Maybe it is the continuous assault on truth and fairness and vulnerable people that comes in a never ending stream from the WH. Maybe it is the pandemic and the weariness of the (necessary) restrictions, but news of his death hit me hard.

I have to believe that enough people learned from him, and are carrying on his work. I have to believe someone who fought so hard and paid for his activism with physical assaults would not leave us unprepared for the fight to regain the soul of this country. The impact he had on this country are immeasurable. Rest in Power, John Lewis. I hope from wherever you are, you will be able to watch and see that your sacrifices were not in vain.
