We R Endangered

Well, wouldn’t you know it…today is Endangered Species Day! A day when people gather around the table and invite pandas to have as many cuppycakes as they want…and…no? That’s not what endangered species day is all about? Okay, smarty pants…why don’t all you folks down at the Pan Diego Zoo tell us what the day is supposed to be about if it’s not about giving pandas cuppycakes.

We R Endangered, for crying out loud!

This was way too much fun. :o)

Artists are also on the threatened species list…

But it’s not just pandas and..um…a bunch of other animals that are endangered. As an artist and a writer, I have been feeling kind of endangered myself these past few years, and one of the effects of that has been that at times (only at times, mind you) I have felt like I was losing my creative focus.

I have often mentioned, from time to time, people from whom I have taken inspiration. I include my favorite painters, as well as those writers and cartoonists who have helped to shape The Panda Chronicles, even if they didn’t know they were doing it. One of those people is Jessica Abel, who along with her husband Matt Madden wrote Drawing with Words and Writing with Pictures.  Along with Scott McCloud, who wrote the Understanding Comics series, these books helped to make the Panda Chronicles become what it has today.

The discovery of the terrible crime in the pandas’ house…

Most artists and writers stumble from their path. They endlessly refresh their Twidder feeds, or they play computer solitaire when they should be painting. Goodness, ha ha! I don’t know anyone who does that…it’s just something…um…I heard someone say once, in passing. So, it was with great interest when Jessica started writing in her newsletter, about a book she was writing on creative focus, and how to get out of your creative rut. It’s called Growing Gills: How to Find Creative Focus When you’re Drowning in Daily Life.

I’m still working my way through the book, but I’m already finding it inspiring and helpful. Each chapter ends with an exercise to help you first, to see where you are sliding off the rails, and secondly take positive, concrete steps to re-jigger your behavior, to get back on track. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited (if you have that) for free! But I think when I do my next book purchase, that the paperback copy will make a nice addition to my reference library.

My goal is to read a chapter a week, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter. Maybe I’ll even report on my progress here, every once in a while. If you’d like to know more about Jessica and her work, please visit her website here. She’s also offering a 5 day free mini course called Creative Compass starting this very next week! Check it out here.

In the meantime…let’s have some more ‘toons! And while we are talking about creative pursuits, here’s some pandas being creative!

Remember, without pandas, there can be no panda satire!

Here’s hoping that you have had a wonderful Endangered Species Day! Makes a nice change from obsessing over the West Wing soap opera, right?

And don’t forget, in a few short weeks, we’ll be launching our next Kickstarter project, for an extra special art and pandas trip to China!!!

What I did this summer …

…an essay by Pinky Panda… Yes, Pinky is starting to make plans for her summer vacation, or maybe Mommee Mei is making those plans, because if there is one more summer like the last one, bootinis are not going to be enough to quiet the pounding in her head.

So!

But first, a very Happy Birthday, to friend of the internet, soon to be friend IRL Vicky Vladic. Somehow your birthday was written down in my calendar, so even though it will be the day AFTER your birthday by the time you read this, let me say, a very happy birthday to you. I hope there will be lots of cuppycakes!

And now, a summer adventure for Pinky Panda!

What could be in a letter to Pinky?

Meanwhile, I am beginning to gear up for my Kickstarter project! Stay tuned, oh panda fans! And look out Mr. Kitty! The panda kindergarten is on it’s way!

Lunch on the Limpopo Part 2

Oh my, oh my! Seems like there may be crocodiles cruising the Potomac, looking for politicians to to chomp. The news has been very …what would you call it? Wild? Unbelievable? But in a year when so many things seem like they should be beyond belief, I’m trying not to think, “oh, this is one more thing of no consequence…something I never thought I would see, and yet, there seem to be no consequences.” Are crocodiles lunching on hunters any more unbelievable? The Limpopo seems a benevolent place, compared to what is happening in Washington DC.

Stay tuned.

But now, Lunch on the Limpopo Part 2!!!!

You just can’t trust crocodiles.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mom’s out there, pandas and human (okay, and puppies and kittens et al) here’s a bonus Mom’s day ‘toon for you!

Let’s celebrate baby pandas!

Um…I just returned from a 10 hour lunch. Should I be telling you this? This does remind me of yet another reason why I should schedule posts ahead of time, because you never know when you will be having so much fun at a lunch get-together, that then you will be invited for dinner too.

Ahem…

SO, LET’S BRING ON THE BABY PANDAS!!!!

Lunch on the Limpopo part 1

Well, wasn’t that a fun little tale, of KittySue and the Three Pandas? And for those of you who were wondering if maybe you missed an episode between episode 12 and episode unlucky 13 (aka the finale), well, you didn’t. We were employing the time honored dramatic tactic of only implying that violence was going to take place. (In my house, this is usually accomplished by putting a blanket over my head and asking Mr. Badger to tell me when the scary part is over.) But now, we turn to a real life drama that took place in Africa, on the banks of the Limpopo River.

We call this little segment, Lunch on the Limpopo

Finale: KittySue and the Three Pandas

Oh my! What a dramatic ending after a wild ride! Do not mess with pandas! You will be sorry. Pandas are not joking around (or so I’ve heard.)

Nothing like drying laundry in the sun to get rid of …um…unpleasant stains and odors. Pandas take note.

What a lovely day for the 3 pandas to relax at home!

Panda Satire update!

I want to give you, my long suffering  most loyal fans a heads up. In barely a months time I will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise some of the money for a trip to China, that has been in the… what if…should we,… hey, do you want to… stages of planning for going on about 2 years. Yes, Bob T Panda is going to go to China and frolic with toddler pandas.

This will be both a fine art and panda satire expotition, and besides frolicking with baby pandas, I will be busy sketching and photographing not only pandas, but also the landscape, architecture and people of China. I generally come back from a trip like this with renewed creativity, and a barrel full of source material.

Stay tuned for project launch news! I’m expecting to be ready to launch the project by June 7th.

One of my traveling companions having lunch with a friend. Picture me, Bob T, doing this very thing! Thanks Cami!

I’m not a Doctor …

…but I play one in Congress. Well, I have been restraining myself (somewhat) on commenting on the political shenanigans coming out of Washington DC (heretofore known as “The OTHER Washington) but I’m afraid they’ve riled me yet again. Actually, I’m in a fairly constant state of rage and anxiety these days, as are many of my friends. Doctor Doctor can’t you give me something to ease my pain and suffering? Nope, sorry. Political anxiety is no longer covered by your insurance. You may want to print this list to see who you want to vote out in 2018.

Unless, of course, you are a member of Congress, and then you have the best healthcare in the country, paid by guess who?

So, with all that in mind, it seems like a great time to replay these ‘toons, in which Bob plays a soap opera doctor, on All My Pandas Time of  General Suffering…or something like that.

All My Pandas……

Oh, Doctor …

I'm not a doctor but I play one on television

And it is but a small leap (well in my mind, anyway) from pandas pretending to be soap opera doctors to pandas with gender identity issues, because you know your government wants to have something to say about that too!

Episode 12: You Have Got to be Kidding Me

Oh man! I thought pandas were sweet, cute, and cuddly, and don’t have a vicious bone in their bodies. Could this have a parallel in the real world, and give us any information why a certain spokesperson for #NMP has seeming disappeared with out a trace? Are you kidding me? You can’t mean that PANDAS had anything to do with the real life disappearance…

The three pandas aren’t kidding around here, KittySue…

Pandas are very misunderstood, in so many ways….

Tune in Sunday the the dramatic conclusion of KittySue and the Three Pandas!

Meanwhile, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to my If you give a panda a cuppycake campaign. I really appreciate your generosity. You guys are the bears!

The Stars Have Dimmed

Before we get to the next episode of the KittySue and the Three Pandas saga, I want to take a moment to say farewell and remember a stalwart supporter of panda satire who has crossed over the bridge to the great beyond this week. I speak of RumpyDog, who has made the life of his typer (that’s what we call those who type on the computer, for those whose paws cannot navigate a keyboard) Jen T. and several kitties, richer a thousand times over.

Those of you with pets, know of what I speak. We know that they are here for such a short time, compared to our own lifespans, but they bring so much to our lives. Rumpy had his own blog where he wrote about animal welfare issues, and life with a household full of cats. He even made a guest appearance here once or twice. Rumpy lived a good life once he found his forever home and he will be missed by all who knew him. Even the cats.

Run free, Rumpy. We won’t forget you.

Huzzah for Rumpy Dog!

Meanwhile, back at the pandas’ cottage…

Can she really DO that????

Oh my! I am on the edge of my seat, and only 2 more episodes to go!!!

How will it all end????

Meanwhile, I’ve made a change or two here. You can read the account of my pandapiphany, which is now public. Just hover the mouse over the Cast and Crew heading at the top of the page and another hidden page listing will appear, called From Pandapiphany to Princess Pinky
click on that and you can read an illustrated account of my journey into panda satire. It includes VERY early drawings that have not ever been published here. Enjoy!

From time to time, people have suggested that I put a link on the blog so that they could contribute to panda satire. I’ve thought about opening a Patreon account, but ultimately decided that it would be like running a full time Kickstarter campaign, and really, I felt it would result in far more whining than I really wanted to do. I recently set up a PayPal.me account as a way to do remote sales. As an experiment, I decided to set up a link so that if people wanted to, they could make small donations to this blog.

Using the public radio model, where  content is provided for free, and if people enjoy it, they can chose to support it, if they are able to do so. I feel strongly that anyone should be able to read my cartoons for free, and not have paid subscriptions or annoying ads on my site. (Well, other than me whinging to you about Buy My Books! every now and again. But you know…a bear has to buy the occasional cuppycake and pay the mortgage on her cave.)

Look for the surrealistic panda with a cuppycake in the sidebar to the right, click on it, and it will take you to my PayPal.me thingie.

Follow the panda. or the cuppycake, to support panda satire!

See you on Wednesday for the next exciting episode of the KittySue and the Three Pandas saga!

Fabulous Furry Friday Presents…

Hmmm… I had an idea the other day, but I seem to have misplaced it. That will teach me to write things down more often, especially when I have an idea! Fabulous Furry Friday comes but once a week, but you can read panda satire anytime. Well, if you have my books, you can, or even if you just pop into the archives and root around in there!

Did you know that Children’s Book Week is coming up on May 1st? Well, even if you didn’t know, it is! Huzzah! And even if you don’t have any children sitting around cluttering up the living room, you are never too old to enjoy books written for children. When I am feeling a little unsettled or fluffy around the edges, there is nothing more soothing than sitting down with my copy of Winnie the Pooh or any of the picture books I have been collecting for the last 8 years.

What are your favorite books for children (and the child still in you?)
