We are tired of gloom and doom. As is my practice, I am getting this post ready in advance, so while in real time, it is still election day, by the time you see this, it will all be over but the shouting. And the suing. Rev up your attorneys! It’s gonna be a bumpy ride! I don’t know about you, but I could use something way more cheerful to read today, so I looked in the archives to find some of the funniest, most light hearted ‘toons I had.

Note from the Panda in Chief: As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, it was assmbled before the election. As you may surmise, I am deeply distressed about the outcome of the election. Please take this group of lighthearted cartoons as a little respite from what ever anxiety, sadness, and fear you may now be feeling.

I don’t know how to process this news, or even how to go on, but I have been through bad times before, and this one is a doozy. Art is the way I process what I experience and feel. And so, the upcoming cartoons, with the exception of the next two (which were done before the election) may be…um…a little dark. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I have to believe that we, as a nation will survive and maybe even thrive, even while I am not hopeful of that. Know that panda satire will prevail and will hopefully bring a bit of light into the darkness that surrounds us right now. Unless they arrest me. I guess that there is always that possibility.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Actually, no, NO! Parting is not sweet anything. I will not be philosophical about this. I don’t want them to go, but gone they are. Mei Lun and Mei Huan have gone on their journey to China today, as per the agreement that foreign zoos make with China. Cubs born away from China still belong to China. The fact that the Meihems went back a year earlier than expected makes the pill more bitter. Twinkies 2.0 are more than a year away from needing the Meihem’s rooms, so I don’t know why we had to give them up so soon. Parting, in this case is NOT sweet sorrow. It’s just plain sorrow.

Hmmph.

But in the world of Panda Satire, Bert and Ernie (the Meihem’s fictional counterparts) don’t have to go anywhere! They can stay right here, with Wu, Bubba, and Pinky! Huzzah! I mean, this is all fiction right?

So join me now, in my tribute to the Meihems (with a little help from their friends…)

A Halloween Carol part 2

OOO! Here we are all again, ready for the exciting conclusion of the seasonal classic (I told you it was going to be, didn’t I?) A Halloween Carol part the second! Huzzah! Join Pinky, Bubba, Wu and the Meihems as they teach (well, try to, anyway) Pinky that it’s not all about her!

One of Pinky’s misdeeds has come back to haunt her… can her campaign survive this?

Hmmm… Pinky still does not seem impressed. Perhaps the ghost of Halloween present will have more influence over her.

The Spirit of Halloweens yet to come is not a spirit to be messed with, right? Actually, this prediction turned out to be very accurate.

Surely you didn’t think she would totally reform, did you?

A Halloween Carol Part 1

Last year, when Bubba was but a tiny tyke, I did a parody of the Dicken’s classic A Christmas Carol, starring Pinky, in the hopes that it would make her a kinder older sister. Did it work? You be the judge. Maybe this will become a Halloween classic!

And the Award Goes To…

Sigh…another cycle of the MacArthur Foundation Awards have come and gone, and yet another year when Panda Satire has not been recognized. There is a bright spot, however, even if it did not come to me personally. One award went to Gene Luen Yang, a graphic novelist, who is also the current US Ambassador of Children’s Literature. This is at least the second graphic novelist who has received this award, so I am taking this as an excellent sign that my graphic novel will get published and maybe even sell well. What the heck! Might as well be optimistic about the whole thing, right?

So, once again, here is my annual plea to the MacArthur Foundation to recognize Panda Satire as a worthy recipient of this award!

Why IS there no MacArthur Fellowship for Panda Satire, anyway?

And in other news, for the last week, they have been announcing the winners of The Nobel Prize in various categories, with the Nobel Prize for Literature having been announced yesterday. Once again, Panda Satire has been ignored.

But what IS Panda Satire, anyway? We’re glad you asked!

Panda Satire, explained, not to mention, the first sight of the magical wand, two years before the birth of Pinky.

This just in!!!! The Nobel Prize for Literature goes to: The very Bob Dylan! I have always thought that he was one of the most profound poets to ever strum a guitar, and I couldn’t be happier! (Well, unless they awarded a prize in Panda Satire, but like that’s ever gonna happen.) Huzzah and congratulations to Bob Dylan (aka the other “Bob”) on this well deserved honor.

I just found out that October 1st was 24 hour comic day. Obviously I have been way too busy to find out in good time that this was happening. I will try to do better next year. In the meantime, here are some more panda classics for this Fabulous Furry Friday!

HighwayGate Revisited

Snort…..Okay, okay, I’ll use any excuse to rerun this series of ‘toons about how Pinky closed the highway to Zoo Cublanta right during the Panda Scout cookie sale, in what has become known as the HighwayGate scandal! And now that the Sainted Governor of New Jersey, (the “What Exit” state,) is back in the news about the BridgeGate scandal...well! Seems like the perfect opportunity to me!

Fabulous Furry Friday

Friday is one of those days. I can’t seem to wrap my head around a week being over so fast. I mean it seems like it was just Monday, and now I have to figure out what ‘toons to share to send you into the weekend. I know what I’m doing later in October, because who doesn’t want to have a re-run of A Halloween Carol, which was Bubba’s first starting role in a feature length ‘toon here at The Panda Chronicles!

And then there is the election…

DON’T TALK ABOUT THE ELECTION!!!!!!!

NO….I just can’t bear it. Let’s have something more fun like maybe this:

There are TWO important “days” coming up. No, it’s not Pinky’s birthday again, or even mine for that matter. Saturday, September 17th is International Red Panda Day, and Monday, September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrr! In honor of these days, Fabulous Furry Friday brings you encore presentation ‘toons of Red Pandas and Pirate adventures! Huzzah! I mean… Arrr!

Fabulous Furry Friday

Sometimes I have a really clear idea of what I want to do for Fabulous Furry Friday, like when it is some panda’s birthday or something has happened in the news that I don’t want to just stick my head under the bed to forget, but this week, that is not the case.

It is time for the new school year to start, up here in the Northern Hemishphere, so maybe that would be a goos subject for today’s round of encore presentation ‘toons.

Let’s see what I can find, shall we?

Celebrating Lun Lun

It’s true that most of the ‘toons on the Panda Chronicles focus on the younger panda generation. There is more scope for the imagination, as some other “Anne” (with an ‘e’) might have said. But Lun Lun has recently submitted to an ultrasound, which shows not one, but 2 cubs in the oven. I’m trying not to get excited, because there is still a lot that can go wrong with pregnant pandas. But so far, Lun Lun has proved to be a great mom and has had healthy cubs even while…um…their gender identity was sometimes not what it seemed.
