It’s beginning to look a lot like CrispMoss!

Day 21: 31 Days of Pandas

We have reached the darkest day of the year, in more ways than one. If not for pandas, I don’t know that I would be able to go on. But here are pandas, and here is Pinky and Bubba. You will be happy (or not) to know that Pinky has gotten over her bout of niceness and caring and is back to…um…being Pinky.

But first, here’s today’s travels of Mini Bob Photo!

Mini Bob hobnobs with one of the locals! She’s wearing a tiara! Could it be one of the Royals?

But now, let’s get right to our feature ‘toon!

pandas

surely you didn’t expect Pinky’s good behavior toward Bubba to last, did you?

It is encouraging to note that Bubba is getting wise to his sister’s ways, but he…um…still can’t resist getting wound up by her. He best keep a close watch on Banky Pig, just in case Pinky tries something sneaky.

Day 18: 31 Days of Pandas

Mini Bob is kind of a culturally inclined bear, and so he never visits London without taking in a concert or two. Today’s photographic offering finds Mini Bob in the moments before a Vivaldi concert starts, at the world renowned St. Martin in the Fields. (as opposed to St. Martian in the Fields, more commonly referred to as War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells.) 31 Days of Pandas knows what is what!

And Mini Bob knows what is what; what, what?

The Hills are alive with the sound of Pandas….

And now, we return to the Story of Bubba, a small bear and his tummy…

Pinky does love her little brother! Or…maybe is she trying to pull a fast one on Santa?

You better watch out! You better not eat all the cuppycakes.
Pandy Claws is coming to town.

That’s right!

Day 16: 31 Days of Pandas

It’s Day 16, we have crossed the threshold of halfway through 31 Days of Pandas! Are we having fun yet? Well, we are if we stay off of Fezbook or Twitter or the news, lest we hear…um anything. So today, Mini Bob visits The British Museum and poses with an Elgin Marble or two. I always thought they were actual marbles, like cat’s eyes and whatever those other marbles you play with, are, but instead, they turn out to be a bunch of marble statues and building parts that the English guy Lord Elgin swiped from Greece. Not being a very good visitor, now was he?

31 days

It’s all greek to Mini Bob.

And now, we return you to: it’s a WUnderful Life! Starring The Wu Self!

Day 11: 31 Days of Pandas

Not that this means anything, but in 2 days, we will have a palindromic number designation: 13:31. I know, I know. Who cares, right? All we really care about is whether there is a new cartoon to read and is Bubba in it and did the Russians hack into the data base at The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire? And not that this number is significant in any way, but last Wednesday’s cartoon was the 100th new ‘toon of the year, and is it not some kind of cosmic coincidence that tomorrow is the Cublanta Twins’ (version 2.0) 100th day birthday! Can’t wait to hear what their official names will be be. Of course here, they shall forever be known as Six and Seven, thanks to the quick thinking of Atlanta panda fan, Stacy Watts. Naming rights on the Panda Chronicles Pantheon of Pandas will get you…um…I’m sure it will get you something. I just don’t know what.

But First, today’s travels with Mini Bob…

pandas

Mini Bob plays the Palace

Well, not THE Palace, but a smallish (at least in terms of palaces, in general) palace at Kew Gardens. Note that we had something resembling sun that day.

And now, on with today’s ‘toon, where we rejoin our story of Pinky’s disappointment, with a little bit of Bubba’s real life tummy ache thrown in for good measure.

pandas

Ruh Roh…I’m gonna hurl!

Poor Bubba! While in real life, Bei Bei had a lemon sized lump of bamboo stuck in his intestine, I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of this ‘toon if Bubba ate a few too many cuppycakes. And who doesn’t hate listening to someone else toss their…um…cuppycakes?

Meanwhile, Christmas (which according the certain Republican lawmakers is now allowed to be named again, and Starbucks will be punished if their Holiday cups aren’t Christmas-y enough) is closing in and besides donating to your favorite charity, I hope you will also decide that your nearest and dearest could really use a good laugh this year. And what better laugh-i-gator is there, besides the whole Panda Chronicles book series? Huh?

Day 7: 31 Days of Pandas

And now, 31 Days of Pandas returns to our story which was interrupted by our…um…rant about whether we were allowed to have an opinion or not. Word to the wise, do not make a panda mad! Anyway, we left our story with Pinky at home, hiding under the covers as she tried to come to grips with the fact that she lost the election, and not only that, that the forces of evil and self interest had won by possibly sly and devious means. At the very least, the “winning” ticket has an interesting relationship with the truth, by which we mean that they lie like a rug.

But while the possibility that democracy would come screeching to a halt, lying twisted and smashed as if it were a speeding car that had hit a bridge abutment after skidding on a banana peel, a bigger catastrophe was taking place, just down the road at the National Zoo, and it had nothing to do with the 39,465,975 gallons of pink paint that Pinky had stored at the elephant house.

Bubba had a medical crisis!

Yes! the real life Bubba, aka Bei Bei, our junior panda in the seat of power, was not feeling well, from what turned out to be a lemon size wad of un-digested bamboo that was stuck in his intestine. He was hauled off to the hospital, where kind and dedicated, not to mention skilled veterinary surgeons removed the obstruction, sewed him back up, and sent him home to mom, who gave strict instructions to rest, play quietly inside, and for crying out loud, chew before you swallow! Dinner time is not a race! At least I think it was Bubba’s mom who said  this. I might be remembering someone else.

But first, this happened:

Meihems to the rescue

And for today’s #TravelsofMiniBob offering, we bring you Mini Bob posing with a portrait of someone who is a shining beacon for all who toil in the gardens of children’s literature. Of course I am referring to that pioneering writer and artist, Beatrix Potter. Her portrait resides at The National Portrait Gallery in London, which is one of my favorite museums, especially when you skip the floor with all the dour looking folks in black coats and big ruffly collars, and head straight to the 19th century.

Beatrix Potter

Look how excited Mini Bob is to pose with one of his heroes!

Until I saw the movie Miss Potter, I did not know that Beatrix Potter was the mother of the Land Trust movement in England; she bought and donated over 3,000 acres of open farmland in the Lakes District in England, thus ensuring it’s preservation for all to enjoy. She also licensed the use of her images on pottery, stuffed animals, and whatnot, thus ensuring that she could buy all this land and save it for the likes of us. It’s no wonder she is a hero to Mini Bob!

Bob Has an Opinion

I know, I know, I know…you come here for entertainment. You come for a little pandy relief from the horrors that comprise the real world. I sympathize. I really do. You come to see funny, badly behaved little pandas, doing non-panda-like things. You didn’t come here to get my OPINION on all this mishegas that is going on. But the fact that I know and can use the word mishegas correctly in a sentence, means that I am a target for that meshugener shmendrik and his minions.

So. I have opinions. read them, don’t read them. It’s okay. Hold your hands over your ears and hum softly to yourself while you scroll till you get to the pandas. It’s okay. I’m glad you’re here. But ya gotta know, I have opinions. And one of my opinions is that these are not normal times. This is not a normal president. We must not normalize hatred or discrimination. Pandas are black and white and asian, and sometimes it’s hard to tell what gender they are. If that isn’t diversity, I don’t know what is.

Okay! you can look now! The editorial is over!

oh…um…maybe not.

opinion

You just couldn’t keep your mouth shut, could you?

And by the way, tomorrow starts 31 days of pandas! I’m doing something a little different this year, because…um…I didn’t have time to draw a new cartoon every day. The usual schedule of new ‘toons on Sunday and Wednesday continues, along with a bunch of my favorite encore presentations on Fridays. On the other 4 days of the week, we have …(make a  trumpet sound here)…

The Travels of Mini Bob! Huzzah!

Mini Bob has just returned from a fabulous trip, sponsored by the Froggwell Cultural Institute, to jolly olde England, where, among other things, he got to see the honest to god original drawings and sketches from The House at Pooh Corner! More on that later, but be sure to tune in tomorrow for the the first day of Mini Bob’s travel photos!

Meihems to the Rescue

When you need pandas, you can’t do better than a little bit of Meihem to fix what needs fixing. Needless to say, Pinky is going to need some extra persuasive coaching to be convinced to come out from under the covers. But meanwhile, back at the zoo, there was some real life drama happening. Bubba’s real life counterpart, Bei Bei had to go in for emergency surgery, due to a “lemon size lump of bamboo” plugging up his guts. He is back home and resting quietly (I believe Pinky is reading him her rough draft of her autobiography, in order to lull him to sleep) and I’m sure I will have a ‘toon or two relating to the ordeal, but first, this!

When you need help, best call for MEIHEM!

Meihem

Care for a little Meihem?

And don’t forget to get ready for this years 31 Days of Pandas! We have a special treat, The Travels of Mini-Bob! Get ready to join Mini-Bob as he visits Merry Olde England, and some historic sights (and Pooh Bear!!!!!)

In the Tradition of Some of the Great…

…popular cartoonists who often used political themes and issues for their cartoons, I thought I’d share some of my more political ‘toons that have appeared over the years. Personally I’ve always thought that humor with a little bit of a bite to it (pandas have very sharp teeth) are funnier than ‘toons that are merely cute and sweet. It may be a bit presumptuous of me to put myself in the tradition of Doonesbury, Pogo, and Bloom County, But I have always been drawn to the somewhat snarky. Calvin and Hobbes is not usually overtly political, but he dealt with some big issues from time to time. They are my favorites!

Enjoy!
