Day 7: 31 Days of Pandas

And now, 31 Days of Pandas returns to our story which was interrupted by our…um…rant about whether we were allowed to have an opinion or not. Word to the wise, do not make a panda mad! Anyway, we left our story with Pinky at home, hiding under the covers as she tried to come to grips with the fact that she lost the election, and not only that, that the forces of evil and self interest had won by possibly sly and devious means. At the very least, the “winning” ticket has an interesting relationship with the truth, by which we mean that they lie like a rug.

But while the possibility that democracy would come screeching to a halt, lying twisted and smashed as if it were a speeding car that had hit a bridge abutment after skidding on a banana peel, a bigger catastrophe was taking place, just down the road at the National Zoo, and it had nothing to do with the 39,465,975 gallons of pink paint that Pinky had stored at the elephant house.

Bubba had a medical crisis!

Yes! the real life Bubba, aka Bei Bei, our junior panda in the seat of power, was not feeling well, from what turned out to be a lemon size wad of un-digested bamboo that was stuck in his intestine. He was hauled off to the hospital, where kind and dedicated, not to mention skilled veterinary surgeons removed the obstruction, sewed him back up, and sent him home to mom, who gave strict instructions to rest, play quietly inside, and for crying out loud, chew before you swallow! Dinner time is not a race! At least I think it was Bubba’s mom who said  this. I might be remembering someone else.

But first, this happened:

Meihems to the rescue

And for today’s #TravelsofMiniBob offering, we bring you Mini Bob posing with a portrait of someone who is a shining beacon for all who toil in the gardens of children’s literature. Of course I am referring to that pioneering writer and artist, Beatrix Potter. Her portrait resides at The National Portrait Gallery in London, which is one of my favorite museums, especially when you skip the floor with all the dour looking folks in black coats and big ruffly collars, and head straight to the 19th century.

Beatrix Potter

Look how excited Mini Bob is to pose with one of his heroes!

Until I saw the movie Miss Potter, I did not know that Beatrix Potter was the mother of the Land Trust movement in England; she bought and donated over 3,000 acres of open farmland in the Lakes District in England, thus ensuring it’s preservation for all to enjoy. She also licensed the use of her images on pottery, stuffed animals, and whatnot, thus ensuring that she could buy all this land and save it for the likes of us. It’s no wonder she is a hero to Mini Bob!

Panda on!

In the Tradition of Some of the Great…

…popular cartoonists who often used political themes and issues for their cartoons, I thought I’d share some of my more political ‘toons that have appeared over the years. Personally I’ve always thought that humor with a little bit of a bite to it (pandas have very sharp teeth) are funnier than ‘toons that are merely cute and sweet. It may be a bit presumptuous of me to put myself in the tradition of Doonesbury, Pogo, and Bloom County, But I have always been drawn to the somewhat snarky. Calvin and Hobbes is not usually overtly political, but he dealt with some big issues from time to time. They are my favorites!

Enjoy!

And Now, for Something More Cheerful

We are tired of gloom and doom. As is my practice, I am getting this post ready in advance, so while in real time, it is still election day, by the time you see this, it will all be over but the shouting. And the suing. Rev up your attorneys! It’s gonna be a bumpy ride! I don’t know about you, but I could use something way more cheerful to read today, so I looked in the archives to find some of the funniest, most light hearted ‘toons I had.

Enjoy and feel cheerful!

Note from the Panda in Chief: As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, it was assmbled before the election. As you may surmise, I am deeply distressed about the outcome of the election. Please take this group of lighthearted cartoons as a little respite from what ever anxiety, sadness, and fear you may now be feeling.

I don’t know how to process this news, or even how to go on, but I have been through bad times before, and this one is a doozy. Art is the way I process what I experience and feel. And so, the upcoming cartoons, with the exception of the next two (which were done before the election) may be…um…a little dark. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I have to believe that we, as a nation will survive and maybe even thrive, even while I am not hopeful of that. Know that panda satire will prevail and will hopefully bring a bit of light into the darkness that surrounds us right now. Unless they arrest me. I guess that there is always that possibility.

Do the Right Thing.

We are down to the last days. If you’ve already voted, huzzah! But for those of you who are waiting till the last minute, or don’t live in a state with early voting, you have 2 more days until we run out of time to do the right thing.

I’m done pontificating (sort of.) You’ve already heard it, and you agree or not. But I would ask one more time. Please don’t allow He Who Must Not Be Named to become president. Don’t overlook the things he has been recorded saying as mere quirks. Please vote.

Where IS Pinky anyway?

Bubba feels so bad about falling for another one of Pinky’s schemes. he’s such a good little panda and Pinky, well, Pinky has a lot of influence on him. Mommee Mei tries to explain to Bubba that the world is not a safe place for pandas out on their own.

And just who is Pinky with?

Pinky

Well, who did you THINK she would enlist in her final attempt to stop Mittens the cat?

So we are getting very close to election day, and whatever views you hold, it’s important to take part and vote.  And if you’re having a hard time making up your mind…

Watch Pinky’s video one more time!

Resistance is Futile

One of my favorite lines in The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is when some robot or other is running around yelling Resistance is Futile and Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect are doing everything they can to resist, to no avail. It’s kind of like that when Mommee Mei turns her laser sharp gaze on Bubba, in order to make him spill the beans. The Vogons have nothing on Mommee when it comes to wielding power.

Did you really think Bubba would be able to resist telling all he knows?

Resistance is futile

All Mei Xiang has to do it look stern and…

Be sure to tune in this Friday for part 2 of A Halloween Carol!

The Great Escape

One of the things I love about Pinky is that she always has a plan. If one plan crashes against an immovable object (say, Mommee, for instance) Pinky always has plan B, C, D, or Z at the ready! And there has never been a den that she could not escape from. Bubba, you still have much to learn from Pinky!

And now, The Great Escape!

The Great Escape

Of COURSE Pinky has a secret tunnel!

Pinky never ceases to amaze!

Are you enjoying A Halloween Carol? Be sure to tune in Friday for part 2! And while this story has not yet appeared in print, did you know there are SIX Panda Chronicle books available to have for your very own? yep, that’s right! You can get them here!

Sibling Cooperation

Mei Xiang should be so pleased and proud! The level of sibling cooperation between Pinky and Bubba has reached an all time pinnacle! And Bubba is getting so smart about the cyber! heh! As a veteran of a number of Kickstarter campaigns, I think Bubba is very well prepared and has thought things through really well.

Well, he thought of everything except the all seeing eye of Mommee!

Will Bubba’s clever plan succeed while eluding Mommee’s watchful eye?

sibling cooperation

Bubba is such a smart little panda

And thanks to the wonderful world of useless information that makes up the internet, I have learned that today is Take your Teddy Bear to Work Day! Really! Cordelia’s mom: get Teddy Rosalie ready for a day at the office!

The Cat Came Back

Oh, it was bound to happen. We know from past experience, that Pinky’s magical wand has a limited effect (well, except for the pooling of the Meihem twins and Po, which changed them into girls forever.) But this is terrible news! We were hoping Mittens would be gone for good but the cat came back and we are NOT glad to see him!

While this is being written in advance of the first real presidential debate, we can only say that we are waiting with baited breath (What DOES that mean anyway? Surely not with a piece of cheese or something on my tongue, does it?) for the credits to roll and the mud slinging to begin. But now, let’s not wait a moment longer to see what happens when …

The Cat Came Back …..

cat came back

Is it just my imagination or does Mittens look even more crazed than before?

Of course, by the time you read today’s post, the first debate will (thankfully) be over. I’m hoping to round up a few friends to watch, maybe with a bottle of scotch or bourbon to help the whole thing go down a little smoother. Maybe a drinking game or two…

Stay tuned folks.

People are Saying He’s Back

Oh no! I thought he was gone for good! But now…now people are saying he’s back! I think maybe Pinky should get a new, more powerful magical wand. This one is just not permanent!

Has the cat, in fact, come back?

people are saying

Pay us enough money and we’ll say just about anything! Cash only please. Upfront.

Hey! I bet you think we forgot about our drawing fro the really cool Toby stuff! We did not! We had Mehitabel the cat choose the winner and….drum roll please….

and The Winner is….

Lisa G. of the grand state of Ohio! Not only is it the Buckeye State, but it is also the home of The Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum at Ohio State University! Huzzah!  (In case you were thinking that comics and cartoons are not worthy of a whole stinking museum!) Thank you so much for joining us to welcome Toby and his book into the world!
