About Panda in Chief

Anne Belov paints, writes, makes prints, and is the founder of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. You can find her paintings at the Rob Schouten Gallery and Fountainhead Gallery, her cartoons on The Panda Chronicles, and her new book here. She also writes regularly for The Whidbey Life Magazine, a free journal of art and culture on Whidbey Island. Her main regret in life is that there is no MacArthur Grant for Panda Satire.

You may be wondering…..

…about that little box that has a countdown to “Project Launch Day”  (which is at 15 days, even as we speak)

But what does it all mean?

Well, oh lovers of panda satire, it means that I finally have enough panda cartoons to self publish some actual printed books of The Panda Chronicles!

Pandas have long been active in literary pursuits

So, having had one successful Kickstarter project under my belt for a fine art printmaking project, I decided that the time has come to let the pandas take the stage!  Huzzah!

My cunning plan is to make it a fairly modest project, so that if I only get enough funding to do the first book, I will be able to take the time necessary to finish formatting the cartoons for print, do all the book-y stuff that I’ll have to do to make The Panda Chronicles Book 1: Your Brain on Pandas a reality.

But….

If I get overwhelming support, so that I go above and beyond my goal amount, it means that I can do all three books for whichI already have completed cartoons RIGHT NOW THIS VERY MINUTE.

But what can I do to help?”  I hear you all saying in the background?  Well, of course I will be exceedingly grateful to any of you who choose to pledge at whatever level you can afford.  Even a whole bunch of $1 pledges move me closer to my goal (and make me look really popular to the Kickstarter staff.)  But what would help a lot, is if all of you who love panda satire the way we do it here, would tell all your friends about my project.  Now, I’m not launching it for two more weeks, because I still have some pieces of the proposal to get into place, but don’t worry, I’ll remind you.  In the meantime, there are still a few Panda Olympic events that need to happen, so keep tuning in.

Here’s what my project profile picture will be, so you know what to look for….

And of course, the panda kindergarten can’t WAIT to help with this project…..

Here we are! At the Olympics! Really! (well, really in a cartoon fantasy kind of way)

You’ve been waiting, we’ve been busy…I know earning a living is no excuse!  So, without further panda-ing around, here is an installment of the Panda Chronicles, LIVE from the Olympic Stadium!   Huzzah!

It’s round, it’s cuddly, it’s black and white…who WOULDN’T make this mistake?

More Olympics coverage to come!   Huzzah!

Be the Bear!

And now, finally, really, THE TORCH BEARS RESCUE AT SEA*

* We would like to point out that even though the English Channel is NOT the sea, exactly, it is a large, scary body of water, especially for 2 small bears in a leaky boat, the SS Tipandic.

Finally we had time to rescue the torch bears, so that we could get on with the Olympics (before they are over in real life.) So, without further much ado about pandas,  here they are, the 2012 Torch Bears!

Tune in next week for more panda olympic coverage!

Be the (slightly soggy, but still cuppycake obsessed) Bear!

Huzzah, Huzzah, A bear is born!

We are quite excited to learn that a new panda cub was born to Madame Bai Yun, the queen of panda moms, at the San Diego Zoo yesterday afternoon.  (no midnight vigils for Bai! )

Now if only Mei Xiang and Ya Ya could share in the blessed events….

we are still hoping for a panda cub trifecta

Later this week…the exciting conclusion to the torch bear’s saga!

Somewhere in London, the pandas wait for the torch bears!

The opening ceremonies have begun…the pandas are at the starting post, poised by the pool, practicing pandanastics pirouettes….The glory of Pandyland is at stake. They have one goal on their minds……

Cuppycakes (or in this case, cookies.)

Huzzah!

Going for the …um…chocolate chip.

Happy Saturday!

The Torch Bears! Lost at Sea?

I know in the “real world” that the Olympics have actually already started, but please bear with us, and indulge me in the thought that the Olympics are just about to begin.

Where, oh where have the torch bears gone?

Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of this story!

Where are the Torch Bears?

The 2012 Olympics are poised to begin and the torch bears are nowhere to be found.  Never fear…they are on their way.  For those of you who are new to the all panda frolic (OK, Mehitabel and one cat) that is The Panda Chronicles, here is a little background on the Torch Bears, who first appeared in 2008, when the summer games were held in China.  The pandas took those games by storm and they haven’t lost their taste for Olympic Gold!

Did the Torch Bears take a wrong turn????

But now what will they do when they get to the Olympics?…..stay tuned!

Another post, but I warn you, it’s not funny…

.. but I probably won’t be able to resist putting in a panda or two.

I woke up this morning, turned on my computer (even though I PROMISED I wouldn’t do that till after I’d done some work first), checked here and saw that more people than I could even imagine visited the Panda Chronicles in just one day.  Maybe it was some kind of computer malfunction, I thought.

Then, after I got done congratulating myself, I logged on to Fezbook and saw the news about the latest shooting in Aurora, Colorado.  What is going on here? How many times does this have to happen before more restrictive gun laws are put in place?

OK, OK, do I really have any business talking about gun laws on a cartoon panda blog?

It’s really not that simple.  I do think that weapons are too, too present in this country, particularly automatic-and semi-automatic weapons.  Do we really need to be armed to the teeth?  But even more than that, I start to wonder, have we fostered such an atmosphere of hate and disrespect that people growing up in our world think that if they have an impulse to go shoot a bunch of total strangers in a crowded movie theater, that they should give in to it?  If all you hear when you are growing up is nasty rhetoric on television by pundits and politicians at what point do you start thinking that it’s okay to hate everyone or maybe just people who are different than you?

As difficult as my 20’s and 30’s were, as a young artist trying to make her way in the world, financially, it had far less peril than a 24 year-old of today.  I got through 5 years of undergraduate studies, and 2 years of grad school, with less than $10,000 debt TOTAL for 7 years of schooling.  I could live on $500 a month, pay my rent and have time to paint, as well as a social life, and still pay back my loans.  The financial pressures on graduating students today are enormous.  If you top that off with the stress of not being able to find good paying work, a violent culture, and hatred and disrespect being spewed over the airwaves, is it any wonder that some people go off the rails, and try to take others with them?

I’ll be the first to admit that I do not dwell in the trenches.  In many ways I have retreated from the hub-bub of the current culture to frolic with the (cartoon) pandas.  I pose the question: If, instead of listening to certain television news shows, with their misinformation and meanness that they spew out night after night, what if we spent that same amount of time watching panda videos of adorable little pandas, following their keeper up a slide, eating bamboo and cuppycakes, or riding a rocking horsey? Would that feeling of peace and “awwww” affect the way we felt about our fellow humans?  I think we should try it.

We have everything to gain.

Be the (peaceful) Bear (well, except for the panda kindergarten and they are not armed)

This is one of those posts…..

…where I congratulate myself for how many people came and visited The Panda Chronicles yesterday.  614 of you thought we were worth visiting.  Either that, or something went wrong with 614 different computers and you were inexplicably sent to this site.  Well, however you got here, I hope you’ll keep coming back and invite your friends to come too.  After all, everyone loves pandas.
