About Panda in Chief

Anne Belov paints, writes, makes prints, and is the founder of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. You can find her paintings at the Rob Schouten Gallery and Fountainhead Gallery, her cartoons on The Panda Chronicles, and her new book here. She also writes regularly for The Whidbey Life Magazine, a free journal of art and culture on Whidbey Island. Her main regret in life is that there is no MacArthur Grant for Panda Satire.

Fuzzy Friday Encores: What Happens in the Panda Kindergarten, Stays in the Panda Kindergarten!

Well, I heard a Facebook rumor in the halls of panda fans, that is too delicious and ripe with possibilities that I cannot afford to disbelieve it.  This rumor, of course, is that an Asian concern has bought a failing Las Vegas Resort, and plans to remodel it and include a multi million dollar PANDA HABITAT.  Could this be true? I am all aquiver with the satirical possibilities that pandas in Vegas affords.

Of course, you remember this cartoon from sometime last year:

What happens in Vegas.....

What happens in Vegas…..

Ah… the possibilities!

Episode 4 (but not quite the last!) of Wu da Pirate!

It has been an exciting, not to mention hair-…er..fur-raising adventure for Mr. Wu and his mama! Here is the next installment in our saga.  (I told you I wouldn’t let anything bad happen to Mister Wu.)

Mister Wu and his new friends.

Stay tuned next week for the final episode of our adventure with Wu Da Piwate.  Where will Wu go next?

Ah springtime, when a Panda’s thoughts turn to….

…appearing on a talk show and airing your dirty linens in public!  Um…that was it, wasn’t it?

"Why didn't we stay home?"

“Why didn’t we stay home?”

* The little “incident thingie” was revealed to us by an enthusiastic panda-attendant at the Edinburgh Zoo last year.  She related the “getting acquainted” foible that occurred when Sunshine and Sweetie got to meet at the “Howdy Gate” shortly after their arrival in Scotland. Rumor has it that Sunshine got so excited at meeting his new lady love, that he did a pandy-handstand right then and there, and…um…peed in Sweetie’s face. Needless to say, this is not the way to impress girls. (Do NOT try this at home.)

I did not make that up.

Your Friday Encore Presentation…getting you ready for….

The Panda Season of….Love!  Yes, it’s that time of year again, when a young pandas thoughts turn to cuppycakes…oh wait…that’s the other 363 days a year!  Now it’s time for that exciting lead up to the 24-48 hours a year, when girl pandas can actually get pregnant!  But did you know that pandas are prone to pseudopregnancies, where you don’t even know for sure that they are with cub, until one drops out onto the floor one night? Boy does THAT make for a tense atmosphere around the den for oh,  4 to 8 months after the …um…well, you know. And let’s face it…it’s hard to see a four ounce weight gain on a panda.

Here are some of my favorite encore presentations on the subject!  enjoy!

And now, the envelope, please…..

As you can imagine, Babette de Panda was quite disappointed that she was not nominated for an Oscar this year (we hesitate to point out that she did not appear in a new film this year, as she tends to be…um…well, you know).  She did attend the awards ceremony as a presenter, and we were lucky to obtain this footage, from sources that must remain, for obvious reasons, anonymous.

What will Christopher Robin say about this?

Hope you are having a happy Monday! Don’t forget to tune in onWednesday when we present the next installment of “A Pirate’s Life for Mister Wu”

It’s Friday! Time for an Encore Presentation!

We’re not sure how it happened, but already it is almost the end of the second month of the year!  Time flies when you are lounging around sipping bambootinis!

We are joking about the lounging around part!  Between monitoring the escapades of young Mr. Wu and getting book 2 of the Panda Chronicles ready for printing, we’ve hardly had a minute to ourselves!

Here is a classic episode of the Panda Chronicles to send you off for your weekend relaxation.  Share and enjoy!

Love the hobby horse on a spring (inspired by a REAL photo of a REAL panda on one.

Another Episode of Pirates of the Pandabean, starring Mr. Wu! (It is Wednesday, after all.)

Yes, me hearties and fans of Mr. Wu!  It’s time for another episode of the piratical adventures of Mr. Wu! Arrrgh!

Can looting and plundering be far behind?

Can looting and plundering be far behind?

Yo ho ho Huzzah!  Oddly enough, I’m listening to a story on the radio about pirates as I write this post.  Arrgh and avast me pandys!  (Strangely, there was no mention of panda involvement in the story of pirates on the Carolina coast.  Go figure.)

A Friday special and a few words from Pandas International

As some of you might know, we occasionally lend a paw to our friends at Pandas International to help them with their work for real (as opposed to cartoon) pandas.  They are getting ready for their annual Black and White Auction, which takes place on Saturday February 23rd, 2013.  Last year our cartoon “when pandas have potlucks” graced the program insert, and this year, they requested that I do something on the theme of “enrichment items” for pandas, or what we call, “Toys for Pandas

I just should not be allowed out into polite society.

I am such a dork.

I am such a dork.

Here’s the info on the auction, just in case you are in the neighborhood, or  want to bid from a distance:

Pandas International Hosts Its 13th Annual Chinese New Year’s Dinner

Pandas International will host its 13th Annual Chinese New Year’s Dinner and silent auction to benefit the Giant Pandas in China.  The dinner will be held in Denver, Colorado on Saturday, February 23, 2013. This year’s dinner will focus on purchasing enrichment items for all of the captive Giant Pandas at the Bifengxia Panda Reserve in Sichuan, China. Enrichment items consist of jungle gyms; tire swings, and various other toys to keep the Giant Pandas of all ages active and healthy throughout their entire captive lifespan.  Pandas International relies on the donations from small businesses in order to make each year’s dinner a success.  They are extremely thankful for the help of Anne Belov and her whimsical Panda cartoons and for her help in designing their dinner programs for the second year in a row. For more information on attending or donation please e-mail Pandas International at info@pandasinternational.org.
