Pandas Are Standing By

Yes, this is a little like those endless pledge drive on public radio and TV. My Kickstarter project will go live next week, on Wednesday, June 7th, tentatively at noon. I thought it would be fun to share some of the Kickstarter and other panda fundraising ‘toons I’ve done in the past. If nothing else, the first one explains how Kickstarter works, as told by pandas because….

Pandas are standing by to take your call!

and that’s what it’s all about!

Oh, Mr. Kitty!

Poot Poot! (This was for you, Cami)

Says Babette de Panda: “It’s all about MOI` “

Our lack of taste is only exceeded by our sense of the absurd.

Ha ha! George Clooney… where do those little pandas get these ideas?

I hope this trip down memory lane of Kickstarter projects past gets you excited about this project, since it’s been a couple years since my last one, to publish Pandamorphosis.  If you’d like a sneak peak preview of what’s in store, check out this preview link!

Mei Watch and the Pitter Patter of Little Paws

Oh, it is that time again! The first cubbies (twins!) have been born at a zoo in China and the Smithsonian just announced in their email that Mei Xiang has entered the Panda Season of Love! And now it is baby panda season!!!!

To celebrate, let’s revisit some classic toons about baby pandas, but first… Mei Watch!

Soooo….you are saying no pandas in bikinis?

#6 is getting ready to make his move!

Huzzah!….ooops.

will the pitter patter of little paws soon follow?

…if I were a panda, yadda dah dah da- da- da- AAARGH! I can’t stop!!!!!

Stay tuned for more Mei Watch news (however we will not be posting videos such as the 2012 video at the Pan Diego Zoo!) as it becomes available.

Pseudo thumbs crossed!

Have a fabulous furry Friday!

It’s worth a mention here, that my secret password only page about the China trip won’t go live until June 7th, when I launch my Kickstarter campaign. If anyone here wants a sneak peak at the campaign, send me a message on the contact page, and I’ll send you the preview link. You won’t be able to pledge yet, but you can see what the project is about and what the rewards are!

We R Endangered

Well, wouldn’t you know it…today is Endangered Species Day! A day when people gather around the table and invite pandas to have as many cuppycakes as they want…and…no? That’s not what endangered species day is all about? Okay, smarty pants…why don’t all you folks down at the Pan Diego Zoo tell us what the day is supposed to be about if it’s not about giving pandas cuppycakes.

We R Endangered, for crying out loud!

This was way too much fun. :o)

Artists are also on the threatened species list…

But it’s not just pandas and..um…a bunch of other animals that are endangered. As an artist and a writer, I have been feeling kind of endangered myself these past few years, and one of the effects of that has been that at times (only at times, mind you) I have felt like I was losing my creative focus.

I have often mentioned, from time to time, people from whom I have taken inspiration. I include my favorite painters, as well as those writers and cartoonists who have helped to shape The Panda Chronicles, even if they didn’t know they were doing it. One of those people is Jessica Abel, who along with her husband Matt Madden wrote Drawing with Words and Writing with Pictures.  Along with Scott McCloud, who wrote the Understanding Comics series, these books helped to make the Panda Chronicles become what it has today.

discovery

The discovery of the terrible crime in the pandas’ house…

Most artists and writers stumble from their path. They endlessly refresh their Twidder feeds, or they play computer solitaire when they should be painting. Goodness, ha ha! I don’t know anyone who does that…it’s just something…um…I heard someone say once, in passing. So, it was with great interest when Jessica started writing in her newsletter, about a book she was writing on creative focus, and how to get out of your creative rut. It’s called Growing Gills: How to Find Creative Focus When you’re Drowning in Daily Life.

I’m still working my way through the book, but I’m already finding it inspiring and helpful. Each chapter ends with an exercise to help you first, to see where you are sliding off the rails, and secondly take positive, concrete steps to re-jigger your behavior, to get back on track. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited (if you have that) for free! But I think when I do my next book purchase, that the paperback copy will make a nice addition to my reference library.

My goal is to read a chapter a week, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter. Maybe I’ll even report on my progress here, every once in a while. If you’d like to know more about Jessica and her work, please visit her website here. She’s also offering a 5 day free mini course called Creative Compass starting this very next week! Check it out here.

In the meantime…let’s have some more ‘toons! And while we are talking about creative pursuits, here’s some pandas being creative!

You say sumi-e, I say Tsunami

After all, the playings the thing….

You left the panda kindergarten alone with my house?

Remember, without pandas, there can be no panda satire!

Here’s hoping that you have had a wonderful Endangered Species Day! Makes a nice change from obsessing over the West Wing soap opera, right?

And don’t forget, in a few short weeks, we’ll be launching our next Kickstarter project, for an extra special art and pandas trip to China!!!

Let’s celebrate baby pandas!

Um…I just returned from a 10 hour lunch. Should I be telling you this? This does remind me of yet another reason why I should schedule posts ahead of time, because you never know when you will be having so much fun at a lunch get-together, that then you will be invited for dinner too.

Ahem…

SO, LET’S BRING ON THE BABY PANDAS!!!!

I’m not a Doctor …

…but I play one in Congress. Well, I have been restraining myself (somewhat) on commenting on the political shenanigans coming out of Washington DC (heretofore known as “The OTHER Washington) but I’m afraid they’ve riled me yet again. Actually, I’m in a fairly constant state of rage and anxiety these days, as are many of my friends. Doctor Doctor can’t you give me something to ease my pain and suffering? Nope, sorry. Political anxiety is no longer covered by your insurance. You may want to print this list to see who you want to vote out in 2018.

Unless, of course, you are a member of Congress, and then you have the best healthcare in the country, paid by guess who?

So, with all that in mind, it seems like a great time to replay these ‘toons, in which Bob plays a soap opera doctor, on All My Pandas Time of  General Suffering…or something like that.

All My Pandas……

Oh, Doctor …

I'm not a doctor but I play one on television

And it is but a small leap (well in my mind, anyway) from pandas pretending to be soap opera doctors to pandas with gender identity issues, because you know your government wants to have something to say about that too!

Fabulous Furry Friday Presents…

Hmmm… I had an idea the other day, but I seem to have misplaced it. That will teach me to write things down more often, especially when I have an idea! Fabulous Furry Friday comes but once a week, but you can read panda satire anytime. Well, if you have my books, you can, or even if you just pop into the archives and root around in there!

Did you know that Children’s Book Week is coming up on May 1st? Well, even if you didn’t know, it is! Huzzah! And even if you don’t have any children sitting around cluttering up the living room, you are never too old to enjoy books written for children. When I am feeling a little unsettled or fluffy around the edges, there is nothing more soothing than sitting down with my copy of Winnie the Pooh or any of the picture books I have been collecting for the last 8 years.

What are your favorite books for children (and the child still in you?)

The irony of Mehitabel criticizing Pooh Bear for his wardrobe, does not escape me.

I’m not sure Mehitabel has anything to talk about.

What will Christopher Robin say about this?

Fabulous Furry Friday

hmmm…well….We’ve already done an encore presentation about the Panda Season of Love, aaaannd, Easter is over, so, I know! WE will do a Fabulous Furry Friday random pick! And you can always ask for replays of your favorite “toons (if I can find them, or if I remember!)

Here’s today’s Fabulous Furry Friday Favorites!

Here’s a selection from March of 2015!

Um…pass the beer and poutine, please!

Okay…maybe ONE ‘toon from the Panda Season of Love!

We KNEW that was you!

I was really afraid this was going to happen.

Now where did that cat go?

Despite the fact that Bob is still wearing his vacation outfit, he’s back and ready to report!

But maybe you should be careful what you admit to, Pinky.

Mehitabel! Can you take a meeting?

Yo, don’t bogart that agenda, boys, pass it over to me….

Here Comes Easter Panda!*

With apologies to Deborah Underwood, whose series of picture books inspired by her cat, Bella Underwood, features a character called (appropriately enough) Cat. Among the titles is Here Comes Easter Cat, and if you’re looking for a book for the favorite child in your life, I can recommend this series wholeheartedly. Although, if you wanted to write a book about the Easter Panda, Deborah, I think I know some people who would enjoy it.  And speaking of the Easter Panda ….

The panda kindergarten has been very, very good….mostly.

What’s Black and White and carries cuppycakes in a basket?

Easter

A tiskitt a taskitt , a great big wheelie basket!

Alas…Easter is not the only event on the horizon…Tax Day approaches, as well….

Taxes

Uh oh…it’s the Pinky Revenue Service!

Will Bob ever learn? will Mehitabel ever get the better of the panda kindergarten?

Along with everything else that’s been going on in the world, (stop bombing stuff, Donny! Making things go BOOM is not especially presidential!!!!) Last week marked to 3rd anniversary of the death of my very dear friend, Jude. It definitely adds insult to injury that she’s not here to talk us down off the ledge during these trying times. I wrote this cartoon for her, to make myself feel better (as if!!!!) and in hopes that in heaven, everyone gets their own panda.

day

As you know, pandas are big fans of Shakespeare.

And one last note…maybe they could get the panda kindergarten to show the White House how to have an Easter Egg Hunt….

What do Pandas do on Friday ?

That’s for us to know and you to (try to) find out. Fabulous Furry Friday brings you the best in recycled  encore presentation panda humor, every Friday! Huzzah!

But first, you might want to hop over to Whidbey Life Magazine and read my post about meeting my on-line panda friends in real life! Huzzah again! You can read other articles there too, but since they’re not about me, you don’t have to.

Pinky made me say that.

Now, hurry up with those ‘toons, okay?????

Varooooooomba! Thanks to Lynnie Ness for alerting us to the “off label” use of the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner.

Did he really have to tell them THAT???? Getting ready for the Panda Season of Love!

And then there was Henry Nicholls’ article about wild pandas….

Thanks guys! No, really.

But what do we really know about wild pandas?

The secret lives of the wild panda!

No nonsense to be found here!

Don’t be an April Fool

I can’t believe I have never (at least not to my recollection) done an April Fool’s day cartoon. Obviously, the panda kindergarten is custom made for this day. I would be an April Fool not to take advantage of the confluence of zeitgeist. Or something like that. So to make up for the lack of specifically April Tom foolery, I shall have a Fabulous Furry Friday of cartoons where the young panda set makes a fool of Bob!

I should have lots to choose from!!!!
