Ta-da! A (serious) Guest Post and a New Cartoon!

Those of you who have been following the pandas know how excited I am at having published my first book.  As part of my efforts to get the word out to more people (so as to achieve panda-world-domination) I’ve been searching for opportunities to guest post and to have some of those folks write a guest post for me, as well.

Today, The Panda Chronicles welcomes Dana Sitar of DIY Writer.  To those of you who are writers or wish-you-were  writers, I invite you to check out her blog.  Maybe her suggestions will be just what you need to help you embrace your inner panda…er, writer.  Here’s an introduction from Dana, along with some panda embellishments!

Make a Commitment to Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2013!

by Dana Sitar – Guest Post – Your Brain on Pandas

What will you cross off your bucket list in 2013? We all have dreams and goals, and some of us by this time have set formal “New Year’s Resolutions” to determine the progress we’ll make on our goals this year.

Have you told anyone about them? Are you keeping them quiet so you don’t have to face criticism if December rolls around and you’ve… *dun dun dun*…failed?

Cut it out! Keep it simple. Join the Bucket List Challenge to let a bunch of other dreamers know what you plan to cross off your bucket list in 2013. Make this simple pledge to cross one, three, twelve — whatever — things off your life-long dream to-do list. Make this little commitment to your goals, and tell us about it, so we can be inspired by your determination and supportive of your dreams.

Um...Bob? It's not that sort of bucket.

Bob Finally Concedes the Election…

We know, we know…the election has been over for months, but we were…um…busy, and besides, Babette de Panda insisted that the panda kindergarten be allowed to recount ALL the votes by..er..paw.  Needless to say, votes were eaten, tummies needed to be um..waited on for “evacuation,”  cuppycakes needed to be consumed. Sigh… nothing is ever easy around here.  Meanwhile, Babette wants to know just what she is meant to do with all those conservative “first girlfriend outfits” that she bought (with Bob’s credit card) for her new role as our nation’s hostess du jour.

Well, three votes isn't too bad, is it?

Well, three votes isn’t too bad, is it?

And from the tooting-our-own-horn department, it has come to my attention that there is a photo circulating around the internet that shows a congressperson with NASCAR-type stickers all over his suit.  I’d like to point out that the original cartoon suggesting this came out a week ago, right here on The Panda Chronicles, so once again, Bob and all the pandas here at The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire have predicted humor trends once again.

In other Panda News, Young Master Wu, our nation’s youngest (and some might say cutest) panda is about to make his public debut at the San Diego Zoo tomorrow. We are sending the panda kindergarten to report on the story, so don’t forget to tune in next week to see their in-depth coverage of this event! I do hope they don’t get into any trouble!

Welcome to 2013!

There has been nothing but wailing and gnashing of teeth over the whole fiscal cliff thingie, all over the radio and I suppose television, if I watched it, that is, which I don’t.  Too much running around chicken little the sky is falling and all of that. It’s one thing to have the panda kindergarten running around, but people in suits?  No thank you.

Anyway, to start the year off right, here’s Bob (failed presidential candidate) to tell us a simple solution to all our fiscal woes!

Hey! I know what would help! Buy my book!

Hey! I know what would help! Buy my book!

Doesn’t that just make a whole lot of sense?  I mean, taking into consideration that it’s coming from a panda, I mean.

By the Way, I’m going to claim that I was successful in my project of 31 days of pandas, even though as my dear brother KINDLY (not) pointed out,  I skipped a day. If you look at last year’s 30 days of pandas that took place in November, where I did ONE drawing that added ONE panda each day, and compare it to this year where I did 30 new complete drawings (some of which are multi panel full story cartoons) which contained an average of 4.19 pandas a day over the 31 day period (for a total of approximately 131 pandas) I have increased my production by over 100 pandas over the same period last year.  And that doesn’t count appearances by Mehitabel.  So there.

My plan (at least for now) is to post a new cartoon twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday of each week.  I will run a “classic cartoon” on Friday, so if you have a favorite to request, just send it in a comment.  I’ve been getting some requests for guest posts here and there, plus my regular new gig blogging at Whidbey Life Magazine, an online arts and culture newsletter here on Whidbey Island. Email subscriptions to WLM are free, and there are great posts from our fearless editor Patricia Duff, as well as noted cheese-ist Farmer Vicky Brown and musicians, writers, theater folk, and who knows what all.

That’s all for now!

An extra new Year’s Message from The Panda Chronicles…

It has been an amazing year here in pandyland, as I look back on the trials and tribulations, the frolicking and fun, getting to meet some of you in “Tai-land” and looking forward to meeting more of you this spring at the home of Wu, I sit and watch in wonder at it all.

When I started drawing pandas I had no idea where they were going, and no idea that it would continue this long: five years since I started finding pandas on stray pieces of paper in my studio, 4 years since I started the blog, and the last year has accounted for 72% of the traffic here at The Panda Chronicles (thanks to to record keeping software of the folks at WordPress.)  This January also marks another milestone for me…25 years of being totally self employed and supported by my art work.  The last 4 years have not been exactly pain free, economics wise. Some of the galleries where I show my work have closed, some have “reduced their stable,” one just quit paying their artists.(I left that one)  But pandas, while they are not exactly “self-supporting” yet, have lifted my spirits, both as I draw them and more importantly, as you read them.  A work of art, a piece of writing, a foozle* of panda satire, does not really exist until someone other than the person that created it, enjoys it.

Thank you for making my work here live.  You are the bears!

And now, my favorite new year’s eve with the pandy kindy cartoon!

Days 29 and 30….Well, I’ve done pretty good so far.

Around here we have a saying: “I just HATE my boss!  she’s so MEAN!….oh wait, I’m self employed.”  So no one busts my chops about not getting work done on time like I do.  Glad you all are a little more lenient….um  you are, aren’t you?  No matter!

So today I have 2 (that’s TWO) cartoons for your panda enjoyment.  I also am pleased to say I had several more ideas as I sat drawing these cartoons.  Huzzah!

And I bet you are happy to see that Little Mr. Wu is safe and sound!

And I bet you are happy to see that Little Mr. Wu is safe and sound!

It’s a little funny to have an actual panda as a character in The Panda Chronicles, as many who follow pandas will worry if I let him get in too much trouble with the panda kindergarten, or be concerned for his safety.  Rest assured, I would NEVER let anything happen to his cute Wu self.

Will Bob ever learn NOT to turn his back on the panda kindergarten? No, we didn't think so, either.

Well, one more day in our 31 Days of Pandas special December Panda Party!  Starting in January, we will attempt to publish on an actual schedule.  After all, I need to get back to my preparations to publish Book 2 of the Panda Chronicles!  It will be even more jam packed with pandas, cuppycakes, and general panda kindergarten mayhem.  And yes Babette, you will be prominently featured in MANY cartoons.  Now will you quit calling me and leaving..um…”messages” on my voice mail?

There is still another day and a half to take advantage of my $2 off offer on The Panda Chronicle Book 1:Your Brain on Pandas ordering from my create space e- store using this code:

Day 28! a Furry Friday Cartoon!

You have probably all been wondering where Mehitabel has been this month.  Needless to say, that after the “rigors” of the Kickstarter campaign, she needed a bit of a break.  Today’s cartoons shows that she is back in her panda kindergarten fighting form, ready for action, and hey! No hard feelings, eh, bears?

Several of my faithful followers and supporters have pointed out that they are fans of MEHITABEL, not just those rascally panda kindergarteners and so this cartoon is dedicated to you all!  While apparently, next year is still not “the year of the cat” it is always the year of Mehitabel!

And a quick reminder that you still have a couple more days to order your book The Panda Chronicles book 1: Your Brain on Pandas for $2 off by using this code:

Mehitabel gets even.

This really was inspired by a story I heard on NPR and I don’t mean National Panda Radio!  I swear I am not making this up!

Day 20 Look Out! The End of the World Approaches!!!!

OK, do we believe the whole Mayan-Calaendar-End-of-the-World-Scenario or what?  I don’t think I do, but just in case, I won’t bother to do my laundry and yes, I will have another piece of cake, thank you very much!

I really hope it doesn’t end (and just between you and me, I don’t think that it is is going to) because I really want to meet the cute Wu self down in San Diego next spring!  But pandas take no chances when apocalypse threatens…see for your cute Wu self in a cartoon we call….:

It was the 14th day of December…..

Today, as promised, there is a full, feature length cartoon for your panda-ing pleasure, but before we get to that, there is an announcement from our sponsor, The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire and Leaping Panda Press.  (It is a very fun thing about the internet, that you can just declare you are something or someone, come up with some spiffy computer graphics and voila`! You are now The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire, and before you know it, everyone just accepts that as fact.  Is this cool or what?)

As you probably know, the first collection of cartoons from the Panda Chronicles was just published and as faithful readers of the blog, you deserve a little something extra in your Christmas stockings.  Until the 31st of December, you can now order The Panda Chronicles Book 1: Your Brain on Pandas  here  and get a discount of $2 per copy by using this code:

Meanwhile, here is today’s feature length cartoon!   Huzzah!

What do you MEAN I didn't win?

What do you MEAN I didn’t win?

And speaking of Kickstarter (wait, who was speaking of Kickstarter, There is a fun project with just under 48 hours to go from a fellow cartoonist who has created a dry erase refrigerate magnet comic strip, so you can write your own dialog.  He has a last “stretch goal” and if he reaches it, he’ll make a bunch of his magnet cartoon strips to donate to Boston Children’s Hospital.  What a good guy!  Check out his project here!

Lucky Seven! a feature length cartoon, for your viewing pleasure.

As you know, I am particularly fond of “making it up as I go” and the “planning” for 31 days of pandas is no exceptions.  So the panda and cake theme will continue tomorrow (while I narrow down the choices for a non-contoversial “F” word).  I had already decided that at least one day a week I would post a full (NEW!) cartoon, starring the full Panda Chronicles cast, including Mehitabel, of course!

The idea for this cartoon is rooted in reality, as while on a recent trip, I was watching TV while following the news of Hurricane Sandy and the last days of the presidential election.  A 5 second clip of panda toddlers at one of the panda ranches flashed on the screen, and I spent the next…um..well a while… waiting for the pandas to return…

Sigh….they never did.

It is a very good thing I don't have regular access to television!
