Day 12: 31 Days of Pandas

We’re not even halfway through the month, so there are many more pandas to come!

This is a good thing, because we need LOTS of distractions this month. Between the disaster tax bill (email or call your Congress folks and ask them to vote NO!!!) the slide into the darkest days of the year, and all the craziness in the news, we need all the laughs we can get.

On top of all the nonsense coming out of our nations capitol, recent news of the illness of one of my long time panda fans and supporters has been on my mind. ALS is a devastating disease for which there is no cure. If it seems strange to be concerned about someone I’ve never met in real life, consider this: the people who read my ‘toons here and in books, and who frequently comment here or in conversations on Twidder and Fezbook, have become real to me. They have become real friends.

I’ve gotten to know them through our conversations in these cyber meeting places. They share pictures and stories of their lives. They cheer me on in my various Kickstarter projects. They have embraced these funny panda characters that have sprung forth from my head and they believe in them. They believe in me. I am so very honored and grateful that you come here and tell me that the day’s ‘toon lifted your spirits, or made you sad, or pushed you to the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next episode.

So, Sandy H, if you are reading today’s post, please know that I have been grateful for the time you’ve been with me. I’m glad you have your family and puppies close at hand to see you through this. You will be missed.

Pinky has called in reinforcements, knowing that she will be in big trouble if she doesn’t get her brother and all the rest of the baby pandas left in her charge, back from the evil Babette!

You shouldn’t have opened the door, Pinky!!!!!!!

This may be a job for...Inspector Panda!!!!

I hope everyone is enjoying their 31 Days of Pandas! I know that it’s helping to distract me from…um…stuff. Like the fall of civilization. I think I need a cuppycake.

The story of Wu running away to join the circus was one of the first longer stories I wrote about the pandas. And it was the first that took Wu away from home and put him in some potential peril. I remember that, as I parceled the story out in dribs and drabs, that some people got very anxious and wrote in to yell at me. Geez! Trust your storyteller, okay? I would never let anything really bad happen to Mr. Wu, now would I? (I mean Pinky’s birth was not really my fault, right?)

On with our encore presentations for Wu: This is Your LIFE!!!! What’s up next for the adventures of Wu? Well, let’s just pop into the old archives and see what has frosting on it!

But first, I wanted to let you know that I’ve just started writing a monthly (or so) blog for our own Whidbey Island Arts Council. It is more of an “arts on Whidbey” sort of venue, but if that interests you, I hope you’ll check it out. Here is my first post for them!

The Internet may become the playground of the wealthy and the republicans may have already passed their most inhumane tax “reform” bill, so all I can do is keep drawing pandas until they drag me off to whatever subversive artist’s prisons they can devise.

But meanwhile, trouble is afoot, because where Babette steps her fashionable paws, chaos and infamy are sure to follow.

Day 2: 31 Days of Pandas

Today we start with the baby Wu stories! These are some of my favorites, as they were the first time I realized the joy of creating alternate characters for actual real pandas! Sooooo, in that sense, Pinky’s persona is all Mr. Wu’s fault!

Am I right?

This was the very first Mr. Wu ‘toon!

Mr. Wu made many cameo appearances before he started appearing in feature stories.

“Wu calls his dance, ‘Ode to a Weaf’ ” The real life Mr. Wu had great fun playing with leaves, which inspired this ‘toon.

31 days of Pandas starts TODAY!

It’s the beginning of 31 Days of Pandas! Can’t you feel the excitement? I think there is a slight whiff of indictments in the air! Oh…maybe it’s the fresh scent of fir trees and cedars and freshly baked cookies!. My mistake! They are so easily confused!

No matter! Every day this month will bring you some ‘toons from the Panda Chronicle archives, along with your regular NEW ‘toons on Sundays and Wednesdays! I’ll be focusing on the stories of Mr. Wu, in honor of the upcoming Panda Convention in March of 2018!

But for today, in recognition of the recent apocalypse EO signed (but then rescinded) by You Know Who on shipping trophies of murdered elephants into the USA, I thought this trio of ‘toons was in order!

Be very careful…It’s a jungle out there.

101 Bebe Panda-Nation Episode 2

I loved that classic 101 Dalmatians, but the lead villain, Cruella deVille was just way too scary. I hope you agree that Babette is a much more cuddly and adorable villain. She has taken a little time off from her very important role in The Pandyland Mysteries series (still waiting for it’s forever home!) to join in for this holiday fun!
