Bao Bao is still a teenager? That means she is a teenage mother! From the CDC website: Pregnancy and birth are significant contributors to high school dropout rates among girls. Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, whereas approximately 90% of women who do not give birth during adolescence graduate from high school.
The children of teenage mothers are more likely to have lower school achievement and to drop out of high school, have more health problems, be incarcerated at some time during adolescence, give birth as a teenager, and face unemployment as a young adult.
All you say is true, and I definitely struggled with the idea of allowing Pinky to be an unwed teenage mom. But she does have a strong family support system, and she is a fictional representation of a panda, so there’s that. Like Calvin’s tiger Hobbes, we just don’t know whether PPJ is real or just a figment of everyone’s imagination. The existence of PPJ is not an endorsement of teenage motherhood.
