As we move into Academy Awards weekend…

…it’s time to revisit this year’s Pandy Awards!

Mr. Wu still has not gotten over the existence of his new girl cousins, let alone that he was not chosen as cubby of the year. (We tried to explain that he wasn’t BORN in 2013, but he was not having any of that.)  Maybe when his book comes out, he will feel a little bit better. (More on The Book of Wu next week!)

Those girls are a force to be reckoned with.

And I’m sure you are happy to hear that my Kickstarter campaign for Pandamorphosis is coming to an end, but I have to tell you one more time, that it’s coming to an end! I hope you will consider supporting it, even for a dollar! Yes, you can do that.  Here’s one more image from the book to enjoy.

pandas are sneaking out into the world....

He is also my favorite panda. (Don’t tell Pinky) He is the first panda I watched since birth, and since he was the only new cub in the US from July of 2012 till the twins were born in 2013, he got all my attention. He’s not taking being “deposed” well.

He was my “first” panda, too, that I watched since birth and turned me from panda fan to fanatic! Watching him on panda cam got me through quite a bit of stressful times! I was so glad to see him, his mama, and his big brother in November!

Is this where I say, like most young men, he is self centered and clueless? Oops. sorry. I still love Mr. Wu, like my first panda that he is. You do have to feel sorry for him, because he never saw it coming.

Glad you like the panda coming out of the screen. I do too. (I’m still waiting for that to happen here. Maybe I need a new operating system.)

Well you can, as I’m no longer young I won’t take offence.
🙂 Most young men never see the things that affect their lives coming at them at all. 🙂
For the panda and the screen, don’t worry about an operating system, just drink a lot of vodka. 🙂

I was hoping you’d see it this way. Nothing like a little experience to help one see the “long view. Now, where did I leave that vodka?”

It’s probably good for Wu that he may be his parents’ youngest cub. I don’t know how he’d handle *gasp* a little sister coming onto the scene and dominating Queen Bai’s time!

Well, there is still some question as to whether there will be a younger sibling for Mr. Wu. The SDZ is being very close mouthed on the possibilities of allowing Bai Yun to have another cub. Sources close to the pandas have told me that the pandas are getting their physicals, and then we’ll see. Last year at the panda convention, Suzanne Hall, lead panda researcher, said they hadn’t ruled it out, and that Bai was in very good shape for a panda her age. I know they would not do anything to put her health in jeopardy. I also think that (the cartoon version at least) would pitch a fit if he gets a younger sibling to challenge his position of the last of Bai Yun’s cubs. (specially if it’s a gurl!)

I remember in one of the blogs, I think Suzanne’s, where it was said that even if Bai was healthy, they would still leave it to her to let nature take it’s course. Wasn’t there an extra year between Yunni and the previous cub?

I love the image of the panda on the back of the book next to the computer. It draws me in every time I look at the print. Love it, love it, love it…

Yes, and when I heard her speak last year at “Panda Fest” she said the same thing. I suppose there are also negotiations with China that we are not privy to, but essentially, if they determine that Bai Yun is in good health (which she seems to be) and China agrees, they will leave it up to Bai Yun and Gao Gao. If they choose not to mate, it sounded like they would not do an AI.
I think there was an extra year between Yunnie and Mr Wu. I will be a very sad bear when Mr Wu goes off to new adventures in China, but hopefully we will have a full 4 years with him. He is such a love-bug of a bear.

When I was there in November they had said that if she wants to see Gao Gao, they’ll let her, but they aren’t expecting another cub- they didn’t even expect Wu. Sounds like they may let Mom and Dad have their fun if they want to because if she does have the hormone signs, Gao Gao will go crazy.

Bears just want to have fun. I have mixed feelings about another cub, but I’m all for Bai Yun and Gao Gao having all the fun they want!

Well, If it does happen, and Bai had another little one, she would be a record maker as the oldest ‘known’ panda to give birth. Wow, that would be one famous baby. Wu would step up to be a great big brother. But can you image Pinky loosing the spot light? **shudder**

I cried when I read that Yunni was going away and I didn’t know him that well. Can you imagine how all of us newbies are going to be when Wu leaves? That made me sad just thinking about it, I guess I’ll go read your newest now….

Aske55 I was a mess with Yunnie left and I only got to know him in the last two years! He was such a flirt in San Diego since Mom and Wu were not in their yards due to a training session so Yun Zi REALLY cranked up the charm! He even looked over his shoulder when I said he was cute from the back as if to say “Darn right I’m adorable!” http://www.flickr.com/photos/annaszootopia/tags/yunzi/

I’m of the frame of mind that Bai Yun’s cub-bearing days are probably behind her and she really has an incredible legacy out there! Her granddaughter just went to Belgium and her grandson and great-grandddaughter are charming people in Taiwan!

Pinky may “lose” the spotlight this year if Memphis has a cub (fingers crossed!!). Ya Ya has a team of scientists working with her and Le Le. Her keeper thinks that MAYBE Ya Ya is a bit freaked out since her mate has the same name as her mom 😉 Another theory is she saw the PandaCam of Lun Lun with the twins on their first day together and say “Yea, I am NOT doing that!”

But really, there’s no upstaging anyone- there’s room in our hearts for ALL the baby pandas!

          7. Panda in Chief Post author

I also think that Bai’s baby making days are done, but you just never know. She is quite amazing.

That Yunnie…he definitely is a charmer. I bet he is charming his keeper and will charm the girls when he gets the chance.

I really hope Ya Ya has a cub this year. memphis has been waiting way too long, and she has many fans.

As far as upstaging behavior, being naughty, and one-upping each other, well, it wouldn’t be panda satire if all the pandas were nice to each other all the time. Remember, it’s fiction. And there is room for all of them…the more, the better.

It’s one of my favorites too. (I know, I keep saying that…) I had so much fun doing all these drawings. It was like being with pandas all the time.

I loved “So girlfriend…” laughed so hard at that one 🙂
And what cheeky little imps the Twinkies are!! xiao liloooser Indeed!
I’m terrified of Pinky finding her wand AND having to congratulate the Twinkies.
So love Mr Wu – it’s getting hard for him with all this “gurl power”.

Get ready for a new story line, as Pinky takes on the Twinkies! That was very naughty of the twins to tease Mr Wu like that. He is a very sensitive boy, even if he was a little “reluctant” to share the stage with a bunch of gurls.

Inspector Panda is coming back too, by…um..popular request.
